It's also an extremely clunky line of dialogue that's about as natural as chicken's teeth.

Hardly the worst. It's somewhat typical of the type of exposition one finds in Star Trek. And you specifically made mention of it's out of the blue appearance rather than its awkwardness. In the hands a better actor it might have sounded better.

Capt. Terrell (Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan) looking at a tank of Ceti Eels rolling under the sand:

    "What da hell is dat?"

    1.) Doesn't he have a tricorder?
2.) You'd think all the money they put into the movie, they'd be able to hire someone to teach enunciation.
3.) Paul Winfield is a good actor. Couldn't the director have had him repeat it a few times?
    4.) Doesn't the Academy...

    Nevermind.

    TOS-ATCSL:
"Death to you all!...Death to you all!...Death to you all!"
Kind of looses it's meaning when being shouted by some old dude in a shower curtain.

Some of these lines are flat out hilarious for how bad they are.

Anyway my pick would be - Captain, I'm frightened

"Computer engage, the manual steering column" one of the most cringe worthy line of dialouge in Trek.

The scene would have been better (or at least funnier) if it had been an old styled control yoke from a WW2 bomber. Like a big steering wheel. Instead of a joystick.

Oh, any line related to Spock's "marshmellon" machine from STV.

At least he didn't try mounting a chair or putting his pelvis near Data's head while leaning on the console with his foot.

Or equally plausable that all Starfleet vessels had standing orders to catalouge gaseous anomalies and were carrying the equipment to do so.

Dr. Coleman (to Janice Lester in Kirk's body): You couldn't because you love him!

Every time I watch this scene with Harry Landers and Shatner, it makes me laugh.

To be complete I think we should include something from TAS (though probably not the worst line in Star Trek)

    In Mudd's passion:
KIRK: Strange, that's the way I feel about you, too. My dear friend, Spock.

Anything Tasha Yar said in season 1 of TNG. Her dialogue was terribly written, her character was dreadful and Denise Crosby was awful as Tasha.

I've always hated this line from Carol Marcus. It's very clunky and nothing a real person would say:

"I canNOT and will NOT subscribe to your interpretation of this event!"

    Ugh.

    Also "Can I cook, or can't I?"

I do like Carol Marcus as a character, and now of course we have nuCarol....

I think the director's cut or special edition DVD (or whatever it is) version of this line is much worse than the version I had on VHS. She's a little more subdued on the VHS version. Haven't seen the BD.

The Blu-ray version is the theatrical version, so it's the 'subdued' reading. I agree the delivery is worse in the director's cut. It's still a clunky line either way.

To quote Harrison Ford: "George, you can type this sh&%, but you sure can't say it."
