Joséphine-Éléonore-Marie-Pauline de Galard de Brassac de Béarn (1825–1860), Princesse de Broglie painted by Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres. This is without a doubt my favorite painting. I would go to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in Manhattan and just stare at this for hours.
Ooh! I saw this! I stood in front of this and looked at it! We went to that museum pretty much to see THIS painting.
Oh, goodie, an art thread! Surprised haven't seen one in time been here. Adore Singer Sargent's portraits Love Paula Rego Kokoscha And I don't know where this is from (was a Shostakovich CD cover) but it's such kitsch social realist, I love it...
I’ve always loved the pre-Raphaelites and in particular The Blind Girl by John Millais it’s so beautiful yet so sad at the same time.
You know that you're a Parisian when you think that impressionism is ordinary stuff My favorite painting might change everyday but today it's something by Georges de La Tour :
I missed that the first time around. The Hopper-promo's are brilliant though [YT]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qg8MyAZYYb8[/YT]
^^ Yeah, Bosch is boss. I love Garden of Earthly Delights. The Scream is a major celeb. Yeah, it's amazing. I'd love to see a full-length movie-- or at least a story of some kind-- animated like that in the style of a well-known artist.
In case of Hopper: A story of invisible dangers lurking just outside the cold buzzing light from the fluorescent tubes in a modern metropolis. A story about one man and one woman that meet -in many places. But never connect. All set to a soundtrack of the most bluesy jazz imaginable.
"Nighthawks" is excellent. It reminds me of my favorite scene in The Golden Compass, when Lyra runs away from Mrs. Coulter to a cafe, a creepy older guy buys her a sandwhich and tries to give her some booze, and she scares the crap out of him by telling him her father's a murderer. Hard to believe it was left out of the butchered movie adaptation... I'm also a big fan of "Landscape with the Fall of Icarus". Who doesn't want to explore that island cave in the middle?!
^^ Indeed. Islands and caves both call out to me. Just your description leaves me with intense pangs of longing.
Son of Man yo! Makes me think of Toys, The Beatles and the Surrealist moment...I <3 the Surrealists!!!
I like Magritte, too. My family bought a print of one of his paintings when I was a kid---my parents still have it. I've always loved it; it reminds me of our California home, which everyone used to call "The Castle."
That's cropped slightly, but it's from a 1944 painting by Alexander Deineka (also transliterated as Aleksandr Deyneka) called "Expance". I'm also quite partial to Matthias Grünewald's "The Temptation of St. Anthony" from the Isenheim altarpiece. A top-quality hallucination, that.
