Re: Grunting Men Lifting Weights At The Gym

I get a fair amount of exercise at work, but without that, I wouldn't go to a gym or fitness club. My dad and I used to belong to one, but we quit, it was a total ripoff. You can do a better workout at home with a bike, or jogging around the neighborhood.

And think about it: Why do people *drive* to the gym?

Because they presumably want their exercise to consist of something other than running outside on that specific route.

I haven't been to the gym in more than two months because I've been sick that long, but otherwise I was going pretty regularly. I'm lucky that it's a small gym in my building so the douchebag level is kept to a minimum, but there's still the occasional gross noises. I wear headphones but there's always that one person that's louder than I'd ever play music.

It's not just people lifting weights either. I've had people next to me on the treadmill making noises as well.

Re: Grunting Men Lifting Weights At The Gym

I much prefer running around my neighborhood and doing free weights at home. I enjoy the relative privacy , but I concede that's not an option that is viable for everyone. And I can certainly understand wanting to frequent a gym that caters more to people wanting to create healthy life habits, rather than those who are dedicating their lives to building muscle. Both are valid pursuits, but I can understand why a person might want to separate one from the other.

It's really interesting how the location can change the activity so much. Running outside along the lake here would probably be more of a social activity than running on the treadmill at my gym.

Grunting when lifting weight isn't something men only do at the gym; my dad used to do it when getting out of a chair... what I'm saying is that it's something all old men do.

My husband grunts while lifting. And when he finishes a set, he goes "WHOOOO!" and drops the... whatever... weight thingie... on the floor. Which is really fun because he does this at midnight, when everyone else in the neighborhood is trying to sleep.

I guess he's just enthusiastic. He certainly doesn't have to impress ME anymore.

I think I like Planet Fitness's no musclehead policy. But I gave up my gym membership ages ago. The showers and locker rooms were extremely dirty; I'd be more likely to get sick than get healthy.
I'd like their policy better if their ridiculous "lunk alarm" weren't so loud. It's far more disturbing than any grunts or dropped weights I've ever heard.

From what I've heard, the cleanliness of Planet Fitness locations varies drastically. The locker room at mine is spotless. (Haven't looked at the showers because I wouldn't use them anyway.)

Because the streets/highways in between are dangerous for pedestrians? Because the neighborhood in between is dangerous? Because the distance is too great for your level of fitness? Because you're going somewhere else afterwards? I'm sure there are a few other good reasons...

Sorry, I forgot to mention I had 24 Hour Fitness membership a long time ago and only heard about PF's policy from watching the link. The nasty showers and lockers I encountered were from 24HF.

I've bought quite a few cardio machines over the years, and I just do 30 - 45 minutes on my elliptical every day. Hopefully, the current one I own will last longer than the others.

But grunting and straining while you lift is cool. Haven't you seen the POTUS workout video?

The grunting thing never bothered me. You can definitely tell though when someone is putting on a show.

Really? It's all over YouTube.

If I had put it together, I'd have used the Rocky theme.

Planet Fitness is the most assinine gym concept I've ever heard of. "We want you to work out...just not too hard." "Oh, and here's free pizza once a month." Because that just screams fitness.

It sounds like the training montage music from Rocky IV.
