Whilst trying to find my lost-a-home copy of Rising Son I was wondering what else to read. Now reading Left Hand of Destiny. Are the Terok Nor or Millenium trilogies worth getting? Other possibilites are: 1. Go down the Klingon Empire branch. 2. Mirror Universe 3. Vaughn Background Suggestions?
The first book in the Terok Nor trilogy is great. The other 2 books are pretty good but aren't quite up to par with the first one. I thought this was the better of the 2 trilogies. I liked the first book in the Millennium trilogy but each one after that got successfully worse for me and it was a steep drop, as in I didn't care for the third book much at all.
I'd say that the usual opinion is that both aren't all-time classics, but both definitely have their high points. The first book of Terok Nor stands apart from the other two and is generally the favorite. I think the Klingon Empire books are probably more interesting, on the whole, though it depends on your relative preference for Klingon culture and Bajor/Cardassia culture.
The MU anthologies I've read are pretty well-good; Obsidian Alliances and Shards And Shadows. The Sorrows Of Empire is highly recommended, too, along with Rise Like Lions and, if you don't mind a break from continuity, Dark Mirror. Vaughn Background: Hands-down the best books for that are Serpents Among The Ruins and The Art Of The Impossible. (I can't speak for the DS9 relaunch, I've not read it yet.)
Millennium is kind of weird, but it does have its moments (my favorite is the "dueling Starfleets" ).
The first book in the Terk Nor trilogy, Day of the Vipers, is just bloody brilliant. It's the story of how Cardassia came into contact with Bajor, and gradually took it over; a great political thriller about how imperialism and greed corrupt a government and destroy a society.
Yeah. DOV is one of my favorite Trek books I've ever read. The other two parts of the trilogy aren't quite as good, but are still worth reading. I haven't read the Millenium trilogy yet (although I have owned them for years).
Oh, I forgot to mention - for my money, the absolute best thing on your list of possibles is Serpents Among The Ruins from the Vaughn backstory section. DRG3 laying it down.
I loved the Millenium trilogy. Lots of alternate-future craziness with the Grigari, some of Treklit's most horrifying baddies. Haven't read Terok Nor yet.
The Mirror universe novels and The DS9 Terok Nor and Milleniumn stories are really good.Terok Nor Day of the vipers is my favorite book of the 3 Terok nor books Exploring the Cardassian Occupation of Bajor. The Myraid Universe books have alot of great stories too,Rise like Lions is an awesome book.
Terok Nor: Day of the Vipers is a great read. I really wish James Swallow had been given that entire trilogy.
Millenium was a great trilogy; all three books---although for some reason when I bought my copies in 2002 the first and third books were 2nd printings, but the second book was still a 1st printing (which I seem to find a lot of with trilogies, the two end books sell the most, but then the middle book just kind of sits there, which is odd---sure it doesn't really tie-up anything, but still it's the middle of the story). Terok Nor I managed to read the first book of the trilogy, but then I found the second book just ran out of gas right from the start, and I'm still trying to finish the book.
