He had Parkinson's and had suffered pneumonia over new years, and was just slowly fading away. He died peacefully with my mum at his side.

Bye Dad, enjoy those football matches up there.

Sincere condolences. My Dad died when I was 19, over 40 years ago. I still dream about him.

    I'm very sorry, Candlelight :(
While it is always terrible to lose someone near and dear to yourself, at least you were grated the opportunity to say goodbye. That doesn't sound like much of a comfort, but those of us who unexpectedly lost a friend or family member will propably agree that being unable to say goodbye is a rather traumatic experience, leading to years of what-if, if-only-I and why-didn't-I.

I'm not really good at expressing feelings in this language, I'm afraid. But if you need someone to talk to (or just someone to listen), please don't hesitate to contact me.

I managed to get up to see him at new years when everyone thought the pneumonia might take him, so I got to say a proper goodbye then (which was good as he effectively became non-responsive not long after that). It's funny how fate works; I live too far away for a simple drive up and so if he hadn't had the pneumonia scare I wouldn't have been able to take the emergency flight and say goodbye... though on the flipside it was that which began his sudden decline to begin with...

Very sad. My dad died of cancer 4 years ago and I can imagine the pain you feel. It's not easy but you will get through it but he will alway be with you.

My father had Parkinson's as well. He was in a care facility for about 4 months located a 6 hour drive away. I was lucky that I happened to make a trip and visited him when I did, because he passed 3 days later. That 12.5 years ago. So I have inkling of what you're going through.
