Hey, so, Greinke is making more money than Price.

From a certain point of view.

From a certain point of view. From the POV of what you said, though, Greinke got less money. More per year, fewer years. Kinda shocked he got 6 years, actually. But in all but common core math, 206.5 < 217 ;)

Said upfront that Greinke would get higher AAV but fewer years, which is exactly what happened. And because something like 60M of the 206.5 is deferred money, can actually argue whether Greinke is making more than Price even with that metric (because obviously not making more overall). Reportedly the deal is worth about 190M in today's dollars, which puts him just over 31M/per if that's the right number. Right in line with Price's 31M.

They'll get a pick back when Dexter Fowler signs elsewhere.

As you say, I'm good with the terms. I'd have hated more money or time.

Kind of a wash since St. Louis gave Lackey the QO, so the Cubs will surrender their own first-rounder.

If the Cubs do well again, it will be a low first rounder. If Fowler goes to a worse team, the Cubs get a higher pick back.

So much for 9 figures, but still a lot.

Shark is a career 4 ERA pitcher with mediocre peripherals coming off his undoubtedly worst year ever, which was also his age 30 season. He is not suddenly going to become a great pitcher and I don't get why the Giants are forking out that much cash. He might bounce back and be not as awful as he was last year, I guess.

God, I can see it coming. Even Year Bullshit-fueled Samardzija is going to destroy the Cubs in a crucial late-season or playoff game.

What about Baez training with Doug Dascenzo in center field? Has he got the range?

And why not send Scwarber down there to train in the OF?

He has the range and the speed. I'm not entirely convinced he has the arm.

His body got a lot worse as the season progressed. He isn't Vogelbach-level fat (yet) but he still projects as a corner outfielder at best, and really, his logical endpoint is as a DH. I think the catching experiment is over. As much as it would hurt to see him go, if the Cubs traded him for a #2 starter I wouldn't shed a tear.

^ Well yeah, have him work as a left or right fielder of course and maybe lose 10 or 20 pounds.

I'd also hate to see him traded, but I said early in the season, if they traded him, the best value would be as a DH. Worth a lot more now after we've seen what he can do in the majors.

That Lackey deal is looking like maybe not a steal but a bargain.

Lackey has been good since the TJ surgery, don't hate 2/32 at all, especially with what pitchers are currently getting.

As a Cardinals fan, I'm trying to figure out what team management is doing (or going to do), especially with the past few years of poor offense.

They're backing up the truck for Heyward I assume. I hope the Cubs steal him.

I keep having a feeling that the Yankees are going to swoop in with a surprise offer for Heyward.

Hopefully they're saving that money for Bryce Harper.

There have been a couple stories saying the Cubs are after a top closer. Obviously Chapman isn't an option now.

Do the Cubs really need another closer?

Well, Rondon was relatively fine in the role last year, but when you win 97 games, trading for a super-elite reliever is exactly the kind of incremental value you look to add, especially when so many of the team's top prospects (Torres, Vogelbach, their billion outfielders in the system, Contreras if they decide to continue Kyle Schwarber's Wild Ride at catcher) are position-blocked, most of them on a long-term basis.
