When I tried the STO demo it would only let me into the Sol system and the "sector space".

    Have they changed it?

Hmm, having been subscribed since before launch, I've never played the demo. It may be I misunderstood the information given to me. I believe you are correct, it's restricted to sector FS001 and the Sol system. Good catch, thanks.

If you like strategy games that focus on empire building and ship combat then look no further than Birth of the Federation... my all time fav!

Sector FS001 and the Sol system would be fine, but what exactly do I have to do
to be able to fly around without battle or combat?

In the meantime I've tried it:
After creating my officer and walking around for a short while
a message popped up from the captain saying "All hands battle stations!"
and that I have got to report to him, but when I report to him he assigns
me to a mission with combat and shooting!
I couldn't find a way to just fly around. Did I miss something?

    Thanks a lot!

My graphics card isn't good enough so i never even got that far. Galling as I really want to play with that character generator.

There really isn't a way to avoid combat in STO. :(

Yup, there actually are some MMORPGs that allow you to be a peaceful trader or craftsman, but STO isn't one of them.

That's the term for the entire genre of games like STO (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game).

Nope - people don't think of these games as "shooters", that's all. A "shooter" generally doesn't have much plotline to it.

Very few missions of any sort without combat. You could get the cluster exploration missions which scan for 5 items. Not too interesting if that is all you do.

This is a conundrum that many games run into when dealing with Star Trek- how to balance exploration with combat (or as Picard puts it in First Contact: "Ooh, three gaseous anomalies, how exciting! We should be in combat!"). I think STO got this balance wrong as it favours combat far too much. There can be a lot of fun to be had out of solving puzzles and exploring new areas, but either engine does not support this style of play, or they have not exploited the engine sufficiently to encourage this sort of play.

Riker's comment probably holds for the vast majority of gamers
