There have been some great scifi movies, but which decade stands out as "the" decade for science fiction movies?

Is it the 50s? The Day the Earth Stood Still..War of the Worlds...Forbidden Planet. Thats a pretty good start right there.

    Is it the 60s? 2001...The Time Machine...Fahrenheit 451...not bad!

Maybe it was the 70s...Star Wars, Close Encounters, Logans Run..

Or maybe it was the 80s-90s-2000s...

But which decade do you think created the most 'quality' of Scifi movies...not quantity...quality...

80s: Blade Runner, Empire strikes back, Robocop, Total Recall, The Terminator, Aliens, Tron etc. That said the best sci fi movie ever made Terminator 2 was a 90s flick.

The 90's. There was so much Scifi on, with the various Star Treks, Farscape, B5, Quantum Leap, and the various movies that came out during that time. It was really fun being a scifi fan.

If you add TV, you might be right. But TV is not to be considered here..only movies..

Well, in that case I still say the 90s. Movies like The Matrix and Terminator 2 pushed the scope in our expectations in movies based on what can be done while still keeping the story. The 80's are really close though, with movies like Aliens and Terminator and Blade Runner all coming out the later part of the decade.

I'd go with the '90s for TV, but the '80s for movies.

If you're combining both the 90's win out just from TV adding a lot more to it.

I'd have to go with the eighties and the nineties a close second.

I think the '90s win in either the movie or tv categories. Though, the movie category is a tougher one.

I'm going with the 80's, but a lot of that is personal preference.

The 80s. By which I really mean 1980-1986. After that there was a rather lengthy lull in quality SF at the cinema. 1987-1994 or so, I don't find to be very impressive. Then it started to get better again.

If we were talking SF TV though, then I'd go with the 90s.

I don't know, a fair argument can be made for either the 80s or the 90s. Oddly, no one listed 2010. I guess a poll is needed Rob, along with a more concise list of movies(best of decade lists, maybe).

Actually, Terminator was in 1984 and Blade Runner was in 1982, so that was the earlier part of the decade.

Anyway, when it comes to decades I don't have a favorite. I think each one from the 50's onward had its share of excellent SF films.

I think one could make a good argument for 1982 being one of the most important single years for SF film: Blade Runner, ET, Tron, Star Trek 2, and probably some other significant ones I'm forgetting.

    The 1980s!

The Terminator alone seals it. Everything else is just gravy... Sweet, sweet gravy...

The Abyss, Aliens, Star Trek II, Star Trek IV...

:wtf: I was pretty sure that came out in 2003.
