I'll just say I have watched X-Men: Days of Future Past, Godzilla and Transformers Age of Extinction, and I liked all of them. I hope to see Guardians of the Galaxy next, if only for someone like Zoe Saldana.

Watched this just before it was set to disappear from Netflix for a while.

Few directors have rocketed as high as Peter Bogdanovich did from 1971-1973 only to fall so far and so rapidly. This is his best film, in my opinion, the story of a con man who is looking to make a quick profit off transporting a little girl to her relatives, only to find the girl insistently tagging along and becoming involved in his various schemes. Tatum O'Neal remains the youngest Oscar winner for her performance as the daughter (as well as the biggest case of category fraud, as she's clearly a lead, not supporting), and it really is a wonderful performance. Though given how things turned out for her relationship with her father/co-star Ryan O'Neal in real life, one wonders whether she shouldn't have stayed with her aunt and uncle at the end.

I just saw "Guardians of the Galaxy" and, yes, it was pretty good. I am, however, more interested in whether and what type of novelverse might be possible. Still not up to going through graphic novels although I learned how to read from comics. Did "Riddick" ever produce novels?

    90. Transcendence (✩✩✩✩) - Download - I thought this movie was pretty solid and entertaining. I don't know where all the hate for thie one or the backlash against Johnny Depp is coming from.

    91. Ruby Sparks (✩✩✩✩) - Download - I saw this movie because of Zoe Kazan who co-starred in and wrote this movie. It's about a young author who wrote one great novel and now suffers from writers' block. He then conjures up the girl of his dreams in his imagination and then one day, she actually shows up at his place in the flesh. He then discovers that whatever he types about her comes to pass. The author is played by Paul Dano, Kazan's real-life boyfriend. Annette Benning and Antonio Banderas also have small roles. It's a pretty nice film that has you wondering exactly what's going on and gets pretty heavy towards the end as it deals with the issue of control, something that plagues our protagonist.

    92. The Pretty One (✩✩✩½) - Download - Another movie starring Zoe Kazan. This time she plays twin sisters. One is pretty and sophisticated (Audrey) and the other is homely and less confident (Laurel). Through a series of events, Audrey dies and everyone thinks that it was Laurel who died, so Laurel plays along and takes Audrey's place so that she can live the better life. Events play out predictably and of course, there's a romance in there but it's actually a pretty decent film especially if you want to get more acquainted with Zoe Kazan.

    93. Some Girl(s) (✩✩½) - Download - My third Zoe Kazan movie. Adam Brody plays a guy who's about to get married, so he travels from city to city visiting previous women in his life that he hurt, all in an attempt to bring closure. Jennifer Morrison, Mía Maesto, Emily Watson and Kristen Bell also star. The movie is actually five conversations. It felt dull in parts but got a little heavy in others. On the whole, I didn't find it to be a very good movie.

    94. Fruitvale Station (✩✩✩✩) - Netflix - Based on the true story of a man who was shot by a police officer right in front of witnesses. A lot of setup and a few obvious liberties here and there but it's decent enough.

    95. Guardians of the Galaxy (3D) (✩✩✩✩½) - Theatre - A different a very entertaining entry into the MCU. My review is here. The 3D is worth it.

Reviewed in the main thread, but in brief this is probably the most singular entry in the MCU canon so far, and the more openly comedic style works extremely well.

Kinda slow, kinda dull, and too many erect penises in the movie, to be honest.

But, hey, Scarlett Johannson's first full nude movie role...looked it up to be sure that it wasn't a CGI body double or something...

I was ready for a really bad movie based on the fact Ben Stiller starred and directed in it, but I was pleasantly surprised. Even though it has been described as a two-hour "Just Do It" ad, I enjoyed Walter's growth as a character, showing actual growth from a man who has been crushed by what has happened in his life and resorts to daydreams to a man who realizes the drive to go out and experience his goals.

The only detractor the movie has in my books was his fantasies, especially the Benjamin Button one, which was seriously cringe-worthy. It's almost as if they needed to give Stiller and Wiig, two comedians, something comedic to do. While it was redeemed later on with the Major Tom in Greenland scene, it doesn't excuse that old dwarf story.

That most unfortunate of creatures, a dumb movie that's under the impression it's a cerebral movie. The trailers for this movie set off a ton of nitpicking around the whole "10% of our brains" silliness that evidently formed the basis of movie's superpowers, but I was prepared to put up with the pseudoscience as the necessary springboard to the action. But it turns out that Besson actually centers the movie around the brain capacity stuff, with Johansson's character focused way more on that than on fighting anybody; indeed, in the movie's climactic fight, she doesn't do anything. Also, the action hinges entirely on Johansson inexplicably failing to kill the various bad guys when she has them completely at her mercy on two separate occasions, which leads to probably dozens of fatalities. It's a waste of a very good performance from Johansson. If Besson wanted to make his own version of 2001: A Space Odyssey, he needed a lot more in the way of intellectual muscle.

And with that, The Man Who Wasn't There is the only Coen Brothers movie I haven't seen. I liked the movie, though the broadly optimistic and consequence-free ending (apart from the bizarre bounty hunter, I guess, but he deserved what he got) seems weirdly out of step with the Coens' subsequent sensibility (though after that being my initial impression, I recalled other films, such as The Hudsucker Proxy, that are similarly set up). Nicolas Cage is very fun as the lead, back when he was widely thought of as an actor rather than a stock punchline. Some of the comedy doesn't work for me (John Goodman and his associate do a lot of screaming in what I expect is meant to be a hilarious manner, for instance), but I liked the movie on the whole.

Guardians of the Galaxy - IMAX 3D - This movie has no right to be this good. I grew up reading the Guardians of the Galaxy comic book. Never in my wildest imagination did I ever believe that a movie about them would be made. While this is no direct adaptation of any of the GotG, you can see the comic written all over this movie.

For me, this is the best movie I've seen this year. In fact, I consider this the best movie Marvel has made. If you want to quibble with me about Avengers, okay I'll listen. This movie made me cry, right from the start. It made me laugh, it made me cry from laughter. Then it made me cry some more. The heart and emotion in this movie is huge. This movie is nonstop but not in a rushed kind of way. It has the right balance of action, humor, and seriousness.

I was only casually aware of Chris Pratt, he was great in this movie. I learned before seeing this he read for Captain Kirk in the new Star Trek. After seeing this, I wish he was actually casted. No disrespect to Chris Pine, but Pratt would have imbued Kirk.

The other standout for me was David Bautista, another person I was only vaguely aware of, I knew he was a wrestler but thats all I really knew. He took a part that could have easily been one dimension and made a wholly rounded out character. Part of it was the script but another part was his performance.

I liked Lee Pace as Ronan, if anyone was short changed it was him. His reaction to Star Lords distraction dancing was priceless. It was one of my favorite parts of the movie.

The only performance I didn't like was actually Michael Rooker's Yondu. His performance was one note and derivative of other performances. I was actually kind of excited when he was cast, thought he could play the character I knew so well from the comics.

The IMAX 3D experience was amazing. You are so enveloped by the screen, the 3D just seams so natural. I'm a believer in 3D, and this movie shows how you can just be lost in it.

I can't wait to own this on Blu-Ray, I can't wait to see it again. There was so many good things, I wish I could list them all. However the soundtrack could be the single best thing about it.

A notable improvement on the 2011 original, which was one of the more surprising movies of that summer. The human characters, especially, are much stronger here, though they remain overshadowed by the fascinating ape society. My only real quibble is the ending, which is a bit halting.

It's an adaptation of a 2008 relaunch of the title, more or less.

This is a really well put together minimalist thriller. I don't know if Pierre Deladonchamps speaks English, but he could have a leading man career in the States.

    86. The Purge: Anarchy ★★★

Quite an improvement over the first film, but I lost interest in the last 30 minutes or so. I'm sure they will roll another one out next year though. There are endless possibilities with the premise.

It's a good movie. Jon Favreau is great. The Robert Downey Jr cameo is forced and it's entirely formulaic, but it's still a good popcorn flick.

    88. Enemy ★★★

Took me three times to get through this. I definitely don't recommend watching after midnight. I'm still not sure I understand it, but I liked it

It's an hour and a half of a guy taking phone calls in a car. Better than it sounds though, I swear.

Help: The story about a collection of first hand accounts by 60's era "colored" maids living in Mississippi. Very strong performances for the entire cast. Worthy of all the praise it received when it came out. Personal note: Ted Welch who played one of the husbands in a bit part throughout the film was a classmate of my brothers but he changed schools so they didn't actually graduate together.

Paris/Love: While looking over Lucy on IMDB(I still want to go see that) I saw this on Luc Besson's Writers credit page. It stars John Travolta and Jonathan Rhys Meyers. It's a political espionage thriller. The Boilerplate is that Meyers(Reese) is trying to climb the ladder and get into the upper eschelon of the spy game. He's passed a few tests and assigned to work with Travolta's character Charlie to accompany him on a task. Charlie is a top tier, if unorthodox, opperative who always succeeds. It's one part James Bond and one part 24 Hours. It's only 90 minutes but I found it to be entertaining and I enjoyed the Pulp Fiction reference. One of the better DDVD films I've seen of late.

Guardians/Galaxy: Even I was skeptical when this was announced. Got more confidence as photos and the first trailer hit. This movie is worthy of all it's praise. It's a great mix of sci-fi, comedy and action. I plan to see it one more time, in 3-D if possible. Great, great film.

Jodorowsky Dune - On Demand - Dune is my all time favorite novel, I've been reading it and re-reading it since I've been 14 years old. I try to read it once a year, over the last several years that has been hard. I have three kids under 5 and they take all my time, I don't really have enough time to just read, forget about rereading a book I've read about 30 times. I'm one of those who prefers Lynch's movie Dune over the SciFi Channels Dune. For me what the movie got right is way more then what the miniseries did. I've watch every alliteration of the movie Dune.

I've never seen a Jodorwsky movie, I have no real knowledge of him outside knowing that long ago he wanted to make a movie of Dune. I didn't know what he wanted to do with Dune or how he was going to do it. So I was immensely interested in this documentary about the Dune movie he wanted to make.

After watching this, I can safely say that calling his "version" of Dune, Dune is probably on scale with the movie The Lawnmower Man. (which I've seen) It would have been his version told through someone explaining Jodorowsky the plot points and him making up his own story. I'm all for creative interpretations of source materials, however I'm not sure about this. I'm not saying he couldn't have crafted an amazing, surrealistic version of Dune. I'm just wondering how high you would have to be to understand it.

With all that said, his passion for his project is undeniable. In fact it is infectious, if they started a Kickstarter for the actual movie, I may have to contribute. I actually wish we had gotten his version of Dune. More Dune is always a plus in my book.

Upstream Color - Netflix on Apple TV - What the F, is all I could muster when I got done watching this for the first time. I was do disjointed that I watched it again, immediately. I was still unsure of a lot of things when I got done watching it the second time but it made a little more sense. I love Primer, it is my top 10 Science Fiction movies of all time. I've watched Primer a ton of times, always getting something new out of it. So I was super excited when Shane Carruth finally made a second movie. I wanted to see it in the theater but it never played near me. Now I'm glad I got to see it at home, where I could watch it twice in a row.

This is some seriously messed up metaphysical stuff, as being high may have helped Jodorowsky Dune, I don't think it would have helped here. There is so little dialogue, so little to help you piece together what is going on. You have to pay careful attention to everything or you will get easily lost. It also will take multiple viewings to get everything, you will be come more aware of whats really going on. Once you do understand what is going on, the movie will click and be way more enjoyable. I actually had no knowledge of what this movie was about before going in, I highly recommend that you view it that way.

Super - Netflix on Apple TV - After seeing Guardians of the Galaxy, I wanted to check out his other Superhero movie Super. I loved GotG but I'm really indifferent to Super. For all the F'd up shit going on the screen, it was kind of boring. The really only interesting character was Ellen Page's Libby. Yet she was so manically over the top, when she meets her untimely demise, you don't really care. I'm glad I got to see GotG first.
