    In Australia, they simply folded the licence fee into mandatory funding from the public money pool back in the 1970s. So, while the Australian taxpayer still technically pays to fund the ABC, we don't have to go through the fiddly process of actually getting a licence renewed, etc. The equivalent is simply set as an annual budget, paid for by the public purse.

    Maybe the BBC could adopt this model. Then again, the big downside of the Australian model is that every Aussie citizen is forced to pay for the ABC even if they don't watch it (and, indeed, even if they don't have television or a radio at all).

    It seems a shame that fundamental reform of the UK licencing act wasn't undertaken when they switched off the terrestial signal. That would seem to have been the logical time for the government to have made changes, in accordance with digital services becoming mandatory.
