Routh's contract to play Superman in a sequel expired in 2009. The sequel clauses probably weren't pay or play as Routh was a newcomer rather than an established star.

Have they announced who's in the running to play Lois yet?

Anne Hathaway was rumored for the role. Natalie Portman was offered the role and turned it down. There was a link posted in the other Superman thread I think. Otherwise nothing definitive.

So for all intents and purposes Cavill was a "safe choice"

Who's the actress if cast would people say was a predictable choice?

    Mary Elizabeth Winstead?

Someone safe, who also actually looks her age -- Rachel McAdams.

If anyone cares...probably not...Henry Cavill received only 8 votes in my Casting Superman? thread.

Brandon Routh got the most with 46 votes.

I highly doubt Cavill could blow everyone out of the water. Routh was fantastic and not giving him another chance is a huge mistake in my eyes. But I guess I'll eat crow like I did with Casino Royale if Cavill does end up being the best Supes ever.

Not closing my mind, just not excited about it.

Anne Hathaway may be up for Lois? Well, that's probably more or less out the window now that she's playing Selina Kyle. As much as I look forward to her being Catwoman, I think I would like to see her more as Lois.

And I did like Brandon Routh, I thought he played the part very well considering the script did not exactly provide for the world's greatest acting and I think he could have done well with another go. But that was almost half a decade ago, by the time this movie is done it will be six years going on seven. I don't think Routh did good enough to warrant WB going back all the time to use the same actor when they are clearly trying to reboot the series.

It would be like trying to reboot Daredevil and saying that Ben Aflack didn't get a sequel so they should just use him. There's no creative reason for that and it just goes to confuse people. No, this is a good decision.

I'm gonna throw in the Olivia Wilde card into the casting hat.

    Lois Lane-Olivia Wilde
    Lex Luthor-Jon Hamm
General Zod-Jude Law (although I dont remember if Zod being in was a rumor or not)
    Perry White-Hugh Laurie
Jimmy Olson-Charlie McDermott from ABC's The Middle

Maybe she can be the Ryan Reynolds of DC and play three characters.

I really don't need another Luthor or Zod movie. If we do want to start fresh, why do we need to go back to the same old, same old. Superman has been around since 1939 and has amassed a huge rogues gallery. It's not even like we have to go into the lame ones. The five Superman movies we've had so far have used a total of two unique villains. We even have an amazing villain in the form of Brainiac. While, I could see Luthor in the capacity of a rich industrialist in Metropolis, I would like to see more variety.

    Edit:
I could get into that. I mean, I don't like her enough to where she's just my go to casting person, but I think she's perfect for Lois Lane. Now that she's mentioned here, I like her more in this part that I do as Catwoman.

But isn't Ryan Reynolds, the Ryan Reynolds of DC? Well actually not even, since hes played characters on both Marvel and DC's side. Chris Evans is probably who you meant.

General Zod turned out to be a rumor only. Lex is bound to be in the film if they're basing elements of the film from "Birthright". I wouldn't be surprised if we got some "Superman:Secret Origin" in there as well. Geoff Johns has a lot of pull with DC Ent right now.

Anne Hathaway was RUMORED to be up for Lois. Her casting in "The Dark Knight Rises" rules her out not. There hasn't been any formal actresses for the role announced yet. As I said Natalie Portman was offered a role but passed, I wouldn't put too much merit in this since she also passed on Alfronso Cuoran's "Gravity" around the same time. Rachel McAdams I wouldn't mind seeing as Lois. She looks like she could be great with Henry Cavil. Elizabeth Banks is another actress I mentioned before.

@ObiWanShinobi...Jon Hamm as Lex Luthor is my pick as well. I would have Lex though as a periphery character. In the background but his presence seen and perhaps felt still. The business mongrel of Metropolis who also has a degree in astrophysics and astronomy. This is how I would portray Lex. I would like to see Brainiac as well.

^ That'd be another great choice. Here are my top five:

    1. Zooey Deschanel (probably not)
    2. Elizabeth Banks
    3. Rachel McAdams
    4. Mary Elizabeth Winstead
    5. Rebeca Hall

As for predicting who was going to be Superman...I voted in Jet's thread for Matthew Bomer. Henry Cavil was my second choice.

Rachel McAdams would probably give the role the much needed spunk it would necessitate (something Kate Bosworth sorely lacked).

I'm just glad it won't be Tom Welling. The guy can't act, and has been proving it for ten seasons on Smallville.

Now onto the Lex Luthor casting. I really hope they have him as the brilliant businessman this time, and ONLY use him as a supporting character and not main villain.

Something like how he was done in the Superman: Doomsday movie would be awesome.

I so agree with JA. Kate Bosworth lacked spunk and passion. Two aspects of Lois's character traits that define her. Erica Durance displayed these two things to a tee until the writers decided to start giving her Chloe dialogue. I'm going to have to ponder other Lex Luthor possibilities.
