The 86th Academy Awards begin tonight at 7:30 ET. The Nominees Sure, it's a lot of politics, but I still enjoy watching them. So here's our thread for our running commentary, rage at snubs, and smug satisfaction at our correct guesses.
My predictions for the top categories: Best Picture - 12 Years a Slave (close race with American Hustle and Gravity) Best Director - Alfonso Cuarón for Gravity Best Actor - Matthew McConaughey for Dallas Buyers Club Best Actress - Cate Blanchett for Blue Jasmine (if the Woody Allen scandal damages her chances enough it could go to Amy Adams for American Hustle) Best Supporting Actor - Jared Leto for Dallas Buyers Club Best Supporting Actress - Lupita Nyong'o for 12 Years a Slave (close race with Jennifer Lawrence for American Hustle)
Guesses: Best Picture: Dallas Buyers Club Best Director: Alexander Payne -- Nebraska Best Actor - Matthew McConaughey -- Dallas Buyers Club Best Actress - Judi Dench -- Philomena Best Supporting Actor - Jared Leto -- Dallas Buyers Club Best Supporting Actress - Lupita Nyong'o -- 12 Years a Slave
Everyone is saying that Jared Leto will win Best Supporting Actor. I can't comment on that since I haven't seen Dallas Buyers Club. My pick is Barkhad Abdi. He absolutely blew me away when I saw Captain Phillips and going from cab driver to Academy Award winning actor would really be something. Here's an interesting article about him… Read more…
I watched Gravity last night, and all I can say is that Sandra deserves the Oscar, should she get it.
My predictions for the Categories I care about: Picture: 12 Years A Slave Actor: I really want Leo to win but McConaughey Supporting Actor: Barkhed Abdi Actress: I haven't seen Blue Jasmine but it's probably going to Blanchett. Of the movies I have seen, I would say Amy Adams for American Hustle, which actually wouldn't surprise me Supporting Actress: Lupita Nyong'o Animated Film: Frozen, which is the best movie I've seen in 2014 so far Director: Alfonso Cuarón Adapted Screenplay: 12 Years a Slave Original Screenplay: Dallas Buyers Club Best Song: Please be Let it Go Original Score: Saving Mr. Banks Visual Effects: Gravity
Well, I'm 1/1 so far. Leto seemed a sure thing. I'm really glad that we'll be seeing all of the Original Song nominees performed again this year. I've missed that.
You'd think Disney's ABC would have Ford come out to the Star Wars theme. EDIT: Could he be more facetious?
Clint and I are going to yell at kids to get off our lawns. True but one comes out first, just a dumb joke anyway....
Well there's my first wrong answer of the night. I had "Get a Horse." The short film categories are often a shot in the dark, though.
Animation shorts look interesting but I haven't seen them. Need to check them out. Frozen, no surprise there.
