http://variety.com/2015/film/news/robotech-movie-sony-tv-series-anime-1201460191/ I am hoping for coolness!
Using music to defeat an enemy is considered a form of psychological warfare. A very useful method especially against a technologically superior enemy who vastly outnumbers you which was the case in Macross. Macross was the first anime that i ever saw. To this day one of my favourite animated tv series of all times. I do agree it will be hard to pull it off as a live action show for Western adult audience if we include music as a form of warfare. The writers of NuBSG incorporated All Along The Watch Tower as the music that the remaining cylons in the human fleet hear in fragments. If you could something similar for the aliens in Macross, that could be cool. A piece of music that shocks the senses of the Zentradi aliens.
Harmony Gold are scumbags. The company basically threatens to sue anyone that tries to license the international rights for the assorted Macross spinoffs from Studio Nue.
I was way into the Jack McKinney Robotech novels when I was a kid. The RPG was fun, too. As for a film version, I doubt that they'd get the visual look right.
...And that's what will turn off the hardcore fans. To basically anyone, adapting "Robotech" will mean adapting "Macross" first. As this is arguably the least changed of the three series that were gestalted into Robotech, doing this means VF-1, SDF-1, a young kid named Rick and an older brother relationship along with the singer and old sourpuss female officer as they all fight an epic war against giant aliens. With an awesome music track backing it up. You get THAT right, you get the franchise. I prefer Macross over Robotech (though I am a fan of all incarnations) and it's a very rich tapestry. I do HOPE they get it right. But I won't hold my breath until we see some visuals that SHOW the visuals are in the right direction. Mark
If they started with one of the other two shows used for Robotech, I am not sure what responce they would get. The Macross section seems to be the one that everyone remembers.
They don't own the likenesses to any of the Macross (or Southern Cross) related material. They only have rights to the likenesses of the New Generation/Mospeada stuff.
i grew up on Robotech (even set up an "Unofficial Robotech Fan Club" back in the day...hopefully i can find it & scan it I'd like to see Jack Black as Ben Dixon, Jessica Sanchez as Minmei, and Tobey Maguire as Max Sterling (assuming the rumor that he was involved in it before)...with an on-set gag with him as Rick Hunter
