Just got promotion to Captain. Right now I have no clue what free ship should I get. Would you recommend the Heavy Cruiser or Escort?

    Depends.
Was that promotion to Captain or Commander? And what did you fly so far?

Till you reach level 50, there are only 3 type of ships - cruisers, escorts, science vessels.

Science vessels are medium sized, weakest in terms of damage capability but often has special abilities that can turn the tide of a battle. The typical science vessel is Voyager. In general, it takes a player who's intimately familiar with STO's ship design philosophy to get the most out of a science vessel.

Escorts are small, fast, nimble and hits hard but can be fragile. DS9's Defiant is the model escort, lots of pew pew pew, but can quickly get taken down by a volley of Breen torpedoes. They can usually make quick work of smaller ships but may need some skill to take down bigger ships that have bigger hulls and shields.

Cruisers are big and slow but beefy and can take a lot of hits. All the Enterprise ships (NCC-1701 no bloody alphabet, A-F) are all cruisers. They are the easiest to command for new players because they can take a lot of punishment and damage-wise is middle of the road.

My usual suggestion for new players is to try and get a feel for the three basic type of ships so that when you get to level 50, you have a better feel for what type of ship you are more comfortable with. That's when you get access to more types of ships such as Dreadnaughts, Battle Cruisers (2/3 cruiser, 1/3 escort), Destroyers (1/3 cruiser, 2/3 escort) and Carriers (2/3 science vessel with deadly shuttles/fighters).

Commander Level is a good time to test out an escort.
You will get an Akira class which is closer to a cruiser than a Defiant at captain level.
If you want to sample a good science vessel, I recommend the Intrepid when you reach Captain.
The Cruiser and Escort at captain are the fan favourites Galaxy and Defiant class. They are the most specialized vessels in their respective ship type, but they also have the most noticable weaknesses.
Galaxy can take a lot of damage but is also almost the slowest cruiser with the lowest damage.
The Defiant is among the hardest hitting and fastest ships with the weakest hull.

But for now, pick the Akira.
You will get a Commander level cruiser for free at level 25, if you play the mission Temporal Ambassador anyway.

So at least in this regard, the game is show-accurate.

Well, a week ago my laptop went belly up after experiencing a cascading application failure. Thankfully, had the foresight to back up all my docs, pictures, music, etc, when I realized that there was something seriously wrong. Figured I'd be out of commission for STO for a bit till I could afford a new machine. However, today was my birthday and my wife surprised me with a new laptop. Much better specs than the old one, and STO runs soooo much better on it.

And because of the server problems last weekend and the pushed back end date of the mirror event, it looks like I will actually get enough transporters to finish the event rep project.

Wow that could have really sucked! Good thing you saw ahead and backed everything up!
What kind of laptop did you get?

It's an Acer Aspire E1. I've never needed a high end machine, because I mostly use it for writing and day-to-day productivity, but my old HP was really suffering. Even for just web surfing. This new one is not close to a dedicated gaming machine, but I really won't use it for gaming outside of STO.

I've just been surprised by how smoothly STO runs on it. I've typically avoided large ground maps like New Romulus and the Voth battlezone, because my frame rate just died on them before. Playing them was often really painful, even with the graphics settings down low. New Romulus is a pleasure now! The other big thing I've noticed as far as playability is that when I click on something, it's more responsive. I often had to double-click things in game to use them, when they were single-click, because for some reason the first one wouldn't register. Much better now.

It's a miracle I played the game for more than a few hours!

Man I feel stupid. After completing the First Contact event earlier I picked the Phoenix thinking I would be able to fly it. Sadly it just follows you like a dog.

I like that they've made the First Contact Day/Day of Honor/Republic Day mission a replayable mission so people who have already done it can still do it.

Also since when does J'mpok have a voice actor?

eh, but why would you redo it? Unless you dropped the pet and wanted it again? Mostly just wandering around and talking to people...

^It gives a Rep Mark box, and a Dil/Lobi choice box (the latter possibly on a 20h cooldown). Plus, it actually isn't just wandering around talking to people anymore...
