"It's not real Star Trek!" "True fans don't like [insert series/movie here]" "It's not canon!" "It doesn't count!" "[insert name here] ruined Star Trek!" "RIP Star Trek [insert years here]" ...all things that I've read in my time here. Vote for all the ones you consider the True incarnations of Star Trek.
Ugh. Instead of taking me to the poll creation thingie it's just dumping me back on the General Trek Disussion page. So... plan B. Tell me which Treks "count" and which don't in your mind. My options were going to be: The Original Series The Animated Series The TOS movies The Next Generation The TNG movies Deep Space Nine Voyager Enterprise nuTrek movies
I think the following count as Star Trek: The Original Series The Animated Series The TOS movies The Next Generation The TNG movies Deep Space Nine Voyager Enterprise nuTrek movies (alternate timeline) T.J. Hooker (alternate timeline)
It all counts (I also accept some deleted scenes in my own personal canon). When it comes to Nu-Trek its an alternate universe, so what happens there doesn't impact on the Prime Universe, so people can either take it or leave it.
No fighting needed. It's all Trek and it's all real. There are simply series episodes and movies that I like better than others.
All of the above, plus Galaxy Quest AND Master and Commander. And that Star Trek episode of Futurama.
Alas, these "fights" are nothing new. Just the other day I was reading a firsthand account of fandom's reaction to the initial reports about TNG. Sure enough, some paranoid Trekkies thought that the presence of a "robot" (Data) meant that Paramount was (gasp!) trying to turn STAR TREK into STAR WARS! The more things change . . . .
Damn that Gene Roddenberry! I don't know who he thinks he is, but he better turn Star Trek back over to the guy who was running it before!
I feel that TOS, TAS, and the TOS movies, and certain books and RPGs are real Trek. TNG, TNG movies, and certain books are inferior Trek with better graphics. DS9 started moving back towards real, good Trek. Voyager had a lot of good ideas and pissed away too much potential. Galaxy Quest is an alternate universe of TOS - and the best Trek movie ever!!! I don't count ANY video games. Enterprise was a reboot that had potential, but had too many issues for me to embrace, and the nuTrek movie was yet another reboot. Character and dialogue were spot-on, but there was no coherent plot, too much nonsense, and too much inanity for the sake of humor. The above describes what I go by when I write fanfic or run an RPG.
