Is there any possibility of taking a look at Mr. Mandell's artwork what started all this...?

    Back to business.

Since the Enterprise has 14 science laboratories onboard. It would be useful to know what these science laboratories are.

There is obviously going to be a Physics lab, a Biology-lab, a Chemistry-Lab, and a Geology Lab. There of course are going to be overlaps as for example we have biochemistry, there's going to be xeno-biology which includes aliens and such, and the like.

I think it would be good to come up with 14 labs. Preferably anything that actually was mentioned to exist on the ship.

Hmm. Some of those could be merged, making a Geological, Seismology and Archeology Studies Lab.

I wonder if botany would have its own lab counted among those fourteen, or if the botanical research would be attached to the botanical garden section and perhaps have a space there, rather than a dedicated full lab?

Hmm, Sulu was working in what looked like a Botanical Lab in one episode, but it didn't look too sophisticated, I'm not sure if it was a full lab or just one of a couple of dedicated Botanical rooms.

Some of those labs could be the size or a large broom closet, so having fourteen science labs isn't necessarily as intimidating as it might appear.

I have always wondered in a time when there are countless member races and worlds in the federation, how do you define Xenobiology? I would hazard that by trek times there would just be Biology which would encompass all of life sciences.

Therorhetical biological science. Things which are an extension of what biology would potentially encompass.

Or, more simply, non-Federation member biological science.

While I'm sure that there are a few specialty laboratories on board, I would think that most fall into a few broad categories with equipment that might be utilized across disciplines. And as not all science is done in the laboratory (not even all laboratory science is done in laboratories), I would think that mission specialists would be given cabins with offices so that they could continue their research while the laboratories are repurposed for another team.

Part of the reason for the science officer to be part of the command staff would be that they are the final word on resource allocation.

It should be noted that while most episodes started out with visiting some unextraordinary planet or charting some uninteresting part of space (with most of the bridge crew seeming bored), throughout the rest of the ship you most likely had quite a few dozen people all fighting to get access to the resources they needed for their studies. And the only person on the bridge who would be fully aware of this would be Spock.

As for where most of these laboratories would end up in my layout... I would think that ring 0 of deck 4, 5 (for those laboratories in sickbay) and 6, and parts of the aft quadrants of ring 1 on deck 5. I think the guest accommodation for mission specialists would also have to be in ring 1 of deck 4 and 6, and the forward quadrants of ring 1 on deck 5 (so that their cabin office space wouldn't be too far way from where they work).
