I too liked The Royale, but mainly because I think the Data casino scene is on of the most underrated scenes in the series. Really loved that scene, especially the music (Jazz) that went with it.

While I wouldn't go that far, I do think it's a very good episode that's often underrated.

I have a very good memory of this episode. I think, its because it is the first TNG episode I ever saw as an early teenager - probably unintentionally while watching TV to kill off time. I am not quite sure about this, but it would explain why it stuck in my head like this.

But I dont think its the best one or one of the best. The story is just too simple for that.

The Royale is awesome, especially the creepy-factor of finding out about the dead astronaut. Riker-Data-Worf always made for an entertaining trio, too.

When Worf pulls the books out of the nightstand I still wish he turned to Riker and said, "Who are Gideons, sir?"

I'll grant you that the scene with Data and the dice was pretty fun to watch especially with Ron Jones' music hitting all the right cues. It's just that the amount of padding we have to sit through in order to get to that point just reminds me of how much time was wasted. The fact that the episode just ends with a "we may never know!" kind of qualifies the Royale as an episode you can skip and not miss anything.

And for all it's story points, TOS's "A Piece of the Action" (Aliens mimicking a human book) and DS9's "Badda-Bing, Badda-Bang" (Solving a scenario in an artificial casino setting) did it a whole lot better.

So I've been watching Season 2 on SyFy HD (I can see them for free - why buy the set?!) and I watched A Matter of Honor earlier - Is it me or are the Bird of Prey effects shots VERY good CG? The establishing shots after ad breaks especially looked pretty solid too me. They may have been DNR'd to oblivion however, but they looked really sharp and close to the original (of course, they may be the original).

...I don't know. Maybe to show support towards something they like? To have a tangible copy to loan, resell or just hold onto? Maybe it's because the BluRay sets come with wonderful special features that spare no expense? Maybe it's because we get two alternate cuts of one of the most critically acclaimed episodes of TNG including commentary?

Oh, one other thing. If you're paying for the channel, it's not free.

That Bird of Prey wasn't CGI. It was stock footage from Star Trek III.

Is SyFy HD already showing the new HD transfers?

I sort of doubt it, strikes me as way too soon for TNG S2 (or even S1) to make it into syndication.

Thanks for clearing up the BoP question. My 720p TV at 50 inches isn't the sharpest thing around, and I was quite far away from the TV. I just remember the footage appearing REALLY fuzzy in one screencap we got, but it looked rather sharp and brightly lit in the episode I saw.

In the UK, they are. SyFy HD has been airing them one per day for the past couple of weeks. It surprised the hell out of me too.

And as for not buying it - the quality is a step down, I can't get it round here for as cheap as I got season one and I dont really have the money to spend on something I don't want all that much.

Season 3 on the other hand has 2 of my favorite episodes of the series (possibly all of Trek) on it, plus the trailer looks stunning. That will be a must buy.

And the channel is included with our HDTV/Tivo/Internet/Phone bundle. Considering I almost never watch anything on TV anymore, finding Season 2 airing on UK TV a mere few days after its release was a welcome shock.

If you're freeze-framing single images in an episode and then blowing them up to find errors you won't be disappointed. I bet that 98.75% of the people who watch the BDS would never notice that (or the viewscreen in "Time Squared" clipping over onto the wall.) Hell, do you know how many times I had to watch "Unification II" in order to see the reflection of a stagehand in a set decoration? Or to see the various mike stands and boom-mike dips in the series? And I've never noticed the crumpled piece of carpet/stage equipment Riker was standing on in (Where Silence has Lease?) that was cropped out for the BD.

Stop going through these episodes and scrutinizing them frame-by-frame looking for mistakes!

I don't have the same problem as you, Trekker 4747, in having people report these issues. I just wish that people would describe for us lay people what the issue is.

I had an issue with the planet Gravesworld. This is a screencap of the planet - http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/File:Gravesworld.jpg. When I see this image, I imagine a person focusing a flashlight beam on a globe. It looks unreal, and is very noticeable in the episode.

As for the shot of the nacelle, what is wrong with the image?

Some of the caught problems I can understand some griping about. But when you're zooming in on a single aspect of a single frame of an episode you're getting nitpicky.

There's that shot of the Enterprise leaving orbit of a planet where the saucer cuts cut off by the "edge of the screen" even though some of the background lays beyond it. I find that shot hard to really see in the actual episode. Sure the crappy-looking 2-footer model is used and THAT is noticeable but the effects problem a little less so. Even more so the edger of the viewer cutting a bit into the wall of the ObsLounge. I mean some of these findings are a bit damn tiny and petty.

Looks fine to me. The planet has kind of a glowy, magical feel to it, which I think was probably the intent.

Watched "Pen Pals," and I gotta say this ep looks amazing in HD. Especially with the Holodeck scenes in the countryside, and all the dramatic closeups of the actors. And it looks like HTV actually got the Enterprise right this time (although Sarjenka's planet is sadly a bit hazy and out of focus).

And watching this season for the first time in a while, I'm finally starting to appreciate Pulaski more as well. I remembered her always being kind of cold and unlikeable, but she actually warmed up quite a bit as the season went on. In fact her scenes and dialogue in "Icarus Factor" were probably the best part of that episode.
