Not a fan either, though I do appreciate how we get to see the crew on their off hours. It makes the ship more believable, but the song is totally gay.

While I like the overall scene, I've never liked Uhura's song. I just thought it was a bit too weird for me to enjoy. I've always wondered, though, if she were "supposed" to make up those words on the spot (as if, you know, all that were actually happening) or if the song already existed as some sort of folk song that developed on the ship.

Considering Rand's "Let'm have it!" look, and Uhura's wink in response...I'd go with a parody song written by the two gals--intentionally meant to be pathetic, in a funny way.

as much as i liked many of the changes coon bought i did miss the more ensemble feel of the early episodes.

were you actually got to see some of the crew beyond what they did on the bridge.
as for sam i sorta wondered if he might have been kirk's former martial arts instructor at the academy or some place else along the way and kirk talked him into coming aboard enterprise.

You know, in the movie James Bond is talking to the girl who was painted gold later. He's getting a chilled bottle of champagne saying something like "Drinking unchilled champagne is just as inappropriate as say, listening to the Beatles without earmuffs." Considering the "Goldfinger" theme song, he's the pot talking about the kettle.

I always liked Charlie X. My favorite reaction of Charlie's is just when he zaps the laughing people (and does away with that woman's face). He yells, "No laughing!" My brother and I occasionally say that to each other when one is laughing about something! -- RR

I like this episode for the view into the lives of the crew, but I never liked the character of charlie- he's just plain creepy and frightening looking. Maybe that's the point?
Uhura and Spock's song is lovely, but the lyrics are also creepy. What on earth did Spock do to warrant such a song?

If I remember correctly, Blish was British and he was sent scripts to adapt a full year before the shows were first aired on the BBC. This was in the days before DVD's and video's and he couldn't just fly over to the States in the hope that he'd catch the reruns. Hence alot of errors in his books.

Perhaps he'd just been through a messy breakup with Uhurah where he'd broken her heart (see Star Trek 2009) ? This was her and her mate Janice's revenge.

BTW the actor, Robert Walker Jr, is the son of Robert Walker and Jennifer Jones, and looks a lot like his dad - who was great at playing villains, as in in Hitchcock's "Strangers on a Train".

He was making gals lust after him just by being his mysterious sexy self?

The original character notes apparently contained references to Spock's "hypnotic" effect on human females:

"Spock's "hypnotic" looks strongly affect Earth females and he goes to great pains too avoid too much contact with them. There is a back story on this-many years ago when Mr. Spock first joined the service, he was careless on this score, perhaps even enjoyed this strange ability over Earth women. But it quickly created both personal and professional troubles."

Blish was writing straight from the scripts. If you read his novelizations they were all based on first or early draft versions of the stories.

They offer fascinating insight into the early versions of trek.

He threw in one or two references to his own work here and there but for the most part he was just cranking them out based on what was sent to him

Many times the adaptations were written months BEFORE the shows aired. Blish was living in the UK after the first couple of books and didn't even see the show.

It was an old tune based on Bonny Prince Charlie of Scotland. Uhura, like any good musician, was improvising and playing around with the lyrics to suit the moment.
