I was reading a promotional issue of Malibu Comics' DS9 series on the Comics Collection CD-ROM and noticed a sketch of a character called Thaddeus Marx and a caption "Thaddeus Marx, one of the new characters created specifically for the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine comic book". Does anybody know if the character was ever used?
No Memory Beta listing... Since DC Comics' Series II was discouraged from having continuing original characters beyond one story arc, I doubt if Marx survived.
Judging from the artwork, I think the character was probably meant as a guest star, not a regular. Next to the sketch of Marx is an inset of a sketch of a ship of some kind, so I'd guess he was meant to be its captain or something. Oddly, the alleged "Marx" seems to have Bajoran nose ridges. I wonder if the caption might have been an error. Annoyingly, there's no artist credit for the sketch. I'm not sure it looks like the style of Gordon Purcell, who was the comic's regular artist.
I feel cheated by that policy. To this day I wonder about William Bearclaw and whether he ever became a great Starfleet officer and captain like his father. Why the hell has nobody written a novel with him in it? He's a great character!
Closest we got to a return was when the timeslipped Arex and M'Ress noticed a plate of bearclaw donuts in the Excalibur's team room, IIRC. (PAD had hinted to his listserv readers to expect a Bearclaw cameo.)
