I hope the full feature is completed, and wish every OS episode could get a similar treatment.

Something like this for all of TOS would make an unbelievably wonderful series collection.

Norman Spinrad brought this to Polaris with him last year, when he was our Author Guest of Honour. It was cool to watch it with him in the room, adding occasional further commentary.

What an extremely well done presentation! Thanks for providing the link. I was particularly impressed with the comparison between Decker and Captain Ahab - which had not previously occurred to me. Though, as noted, the Decker character did possess a greater depth of compassion for his crew.

This is indeed cool. Norman was actually one of my early writing instructors--and taught me how to write novel proposals!

The Moby Dick analogy with "The Doomsday Machine" has been around and discussed for a very long time.

This is fun, although it has the usual share of fannish exaggeration.

    I do what I can. :p

This actually is a quite good little feature. I especially appreciate the analysis of Sol Kaplan's use of musical motifs and Marc Daniel's use of depth.

And you do quite well, sir.

I do agree with you though, it was a very interesting feature.

Robert Ryan would have made a really intense Decker.

This is why i'm hesitant to get TOS on Blu-Ray because I hope/half-expect that this will be done to the episodes for the ultimate fan release. If they plan on this, they better get cracking before too many of the cast and crew pass away.

BTW it was good to see Eddie Paskey in this.

It was good but I did notice at the end that it was copyrighted back in 2010. I hope we see more of this. I always enjoy stuff on my favorite episode.

Yeah, but we mightn't have been able to feel a smidgen of sympathy for him. William played Decker like a good man pushed over the edge. His obsession was driven by the enormous guilt he felt over the death of his entire crew. We found ourselves against him, but we could at least understand him and even feel some sympathy for him.

Yep, I loved those parts. :techman:

Agreed. The Doomsday Machine is among the greatest of all Star Trek scores. It plays really well on CD.

One little problem with the video is the final photo of Sol Kaplan, the one with his dates under it. That's really a photo of composer Gerald Fried (Shore Leave, Amok Time, Friday's Child, The Paradise Syndrome).

Agreed... Ryan might have played Decker as a captain who didn't care as much about his crew as he did his pride, ala Ahab.

Tell me, how many of you felt sorry for Capt Ahab at the end of Moby Dick as compared with how many felt he got what he deserved?
