    Designer babies are still a long way off. What they did didn't work very well. They found a lot of off-target changes. For this to be used in humans, it needs to be close to 100% change, with no off-target modifications, so there is still a long way to go. it's not clear whether it can be done at all.

    The reason why it was published in an obscure open-access journal is because none of the others would touch it due to its questionable ethics.
