I don't get how my pug comment was confusing or illogical. Pugs are dogs. German Shepherds are also dogs. Pugs and German Shepherds look quite different. Thus illustrating the fact that two different animals can belong to the same group, despite looking very different.

Likewise, even though the animal in III didn't look like the targ we saw as Worf's pet, that doesn't mean that the III snimal wasn't a targ.

We've got this image, which we know for a fact is a targ:

We also have this CGI Targ from Enterprise:

Now, I think this creature is certianly similar enough to be in the same category:

After all, we have two creatures, both called targs, which are quite different. The first one is furry with just a few spikes. The second one has many more spikes, no fur and a large horny ridge on its nose. If two animals with such different looks can both be targs, I don't see why the Trek III critter can't as well.

Are pigs and dogs the same species, or are they simply both mammals?

    No, they are different.

However, this is irrelevant to the point that I am making.

And my point is that we can't say that Kruge's pet wasn't a targ simply on the basis that it didn't look like the other targs that we saw.

It's like saying Porthos couldn't be a dog because he doesn't look like Lassie.

As I said earlier, this is the same debate that unfolded here a few years ago. The creators of Kruge's pet - and the jackal/mastifs of ST VI - were based on canines. The targs of TNG and ENT were based on pigs.

The canine-like creatures have paws. The ERTL toy has paws.

The pig-like targs have trotters. The Playmates and Meanie Beanie toy targs have trotters.

Of course, the word "targ" may simply mean "pet". We cannot make a definitive ruling as we have incomplete information.

    Vincentorg: Want some Klingon bacon?

Kuh-less: No man, I don't eat Klingon pork.

    Vincentorg: Are you Jewish?

    Kuh-less: Nah, I ain't Jewish, I just don't dig on Klingon swine, that's all.

    Vincentorg: Why not?

Kuh-less: targs are filthy animals. I don't eat filthy animals.

Vincentorg: Klingon Bacon tastes gooood. Klingon Pork chops taste gooood.

Kuh-less: Hey, sewer rat may taste like pumpkin pie, but I'd never know
'cause I wouldn't eat the filthy motherfucker. Targs sleep and root in
shit. That's a filthy animal. I ain't eat nothin' that ain't got sense
enough to disregard its own feces.

Vincentorg: How about a lizard-dog? lizard-dogs eats its own feces.

    Kuh-less: I don't eat lizard-dog either.

Vincentorg: Yeah, but do you consider a lizard-dog to be a filthy animal?

    Kuh-less: I wouldn't go so far as to call a lizard-dog filthy but they're
definitely dirty. But, a lizard-dog's got personality. Personality goes a
    long way.

Vincentorg: Ah, so by that rationale, if a targ had a better personality,
he would cease to be a filthy animal. Is that true?

Kuh-less: Well we'd have to be talkin' about one charming motherfuckin'
targ. I mean he'd have to be ten times more charmin' than that Okona
on TNG, you know what I'm sayin'?

only until they perfected SFX of people flying, then they died of being sucked out to space. See VOY, ENT, ST09 and Q Who remastered below:

Klingon dogs generally get frantic about being the smartest, cleanest things in their surroundings and eventually snuff it intentionally.

Since we last saw Kruge's targ/whatever when Kruge orders Maltz to feed him. Maltz didn't look happy with that order. When Kirk and co beamed up the targ was gone. Maybe Maltz said he didn't deserve to live because he had done something dishonorable. He had spaced his commander's pet targ because he hated the damned thing.

No, after that scene we see the pet get electrocuted during the battle.

Worf's pet was an artiodactyl, an even-toed ungulate (hooves).

Kruge's pet was a digitigrade, walking on its toes (you can see the distinctive "dog-leg" shape in its limbs).

By definition, they are not the same species.

    :)

I will say the warrigul has a rather piggy face, which may just be more common among Klingon tetrapods.

I regret that we never got to see the saber bear Martok was off hunting when the Dominion nabbed him too.
