I'm with you guys. I'd rather see them do something completely different instead of going back to something from the first movie. I'd rather see them just focus on Catwoman/Selena and Bane. I guess they could tie them into the LoS, but to me that would be getting close to small universe syndrome.

It's getting packed. Bane, Ras, (Talia) and Catwoman.
Sure will be interesting to see where this all goes. I felt The Dark Knight was moving away from the League of Shadows and more onto the mob which I kinda liked for it being a bit more realistic criminal organisation.

I bet you ten-to-one that if the LoS is used, Joker's rampage in TDK will be retconned as being somehow manipulated by the LoS as a forced way to tie the events of all three films together.

As much as I like this casting...has it been confirmed by the studio? LOL. Do we even know if Marion is cast yet and what role is Joseph playing?

Hmmm. Let's assume that's the case. The flashbacks are apparently set 30 years ago.

Tom Hardy is in his 30s, isn't he? Could Bane be Ras' son in this take? Totally speculative on my part but if there's no Talia, this could be an alternative on it.

What did Ras (as Ducard) say about his family in BB?

I think he mentioned a wife, but not children. I really hope Bane isn't his son...that's too much of a retcon from the comics just for a movie, like Jack Napier being the one who murdered Wayne's parents.

Not completely, though, because there was a time in the comics when Ra's chose Bane as his heir, after finally accepting that Batman would never claim the role. So making Bane his biological heir wouldn't be that much of a change.

^ Yes I've already pointed this out much earlier in the thread...like twice now. Ra's mentioned having a wife but not a daughter. As i mentioned too Talia is mentioned in Dennis O' Neil's novelization of the novel (she was not in the Batman Begins script so i'm guessing that this is just something that he wanted to add into the book for story purposes and it wasn't rejected). She's off in Paris studying at a university and Ra's is writing correspondence letters to her, informing her of Bruce's potential.

If I didn't know who was playing Bane, I'd say it's a little too implausible for Bane to be Ra's Al Ghul's heir and son (wasn't he South American in the comics?), but since they got Tom Hardy to play him, I could see Hardy being Neeson's son.

I still don't like the change because I'm a fussy purist that way, but I got over them making Ducard and Ra's Al Ghul the same guy, so I can get over this if I have to. :D

Bane was born in a prison in the fictional Santa Prisca which according to Wikipedia is located in "the northern Caribbean and shows strong influences from the period of Spanish colonialism". It would be revealed later on that Bane was the son of villain King Snake who became a villain of Tim Drake's in his ongoing solo series.

^ Like I say, the Bane-as-Ras'-son is totally speculative on my part. But Nolan and Goyer have departed from traditional Bat-mythos when it suited them. The Waynes were coming from an opera when they were murdered in Begins, as oppose to a Zorro movie in the comics. There was the Ras/ Ducard amalgam and Ras not being Arabic as he was in the comics. Harvey Dent's wife and family were dropped and his transformation into Two-Face also differed from the comics. Then you have The Joker not having white skin, Scarecrow being much younger than generally drawn in the comics, Alfred being a cockney etc.

So I don't think that Bane being South American and not being Ras's son in the comics would be a bar to this plot development.

Yep. This is why I really don't like commenting on stuff like this before we get actual information on it. Two days from now it could turn out the report is false or he's a completely different character!!! LOL.

I don't recall Ra's being established in the comics as Arabic. What I recall is that his ethnicity was deliberately left ambiguous, that "Ra's al Ghul" was a title he adopted. True, I do seem to recall that Birth of the Demon showed him living in an Arab community when he became the man he is, but I think it was stated or at least hinted that he came from somewhere else.

But you're right about the changes, and that's just the nature of an adaptation. Adaptation means change. It's not supposed to be a direct copy, it's supposed to be something that takes elements of the original and finds new ways of presenting or using them. All superhero movies and TV series change things from the comics. The current Marvel movie continuity amalgamates ideas from the original and Ultimate universes. The Iron Man films turned Jarvis into a computer and Justin Hammer into a much younger and dorkier man. The X-Men movies took great liberties with the characters' relative ages and their characterizations. The Spider-Man films replaced a radioactive spider with a gene-spliced superspider, introduced MJ before Gwen, made Otto Octavius a mentor figure for Peter, etc. Heck, if you were just going to tell the same story the same way, there'd be no point in doing it. It's already been done.

^ Why is it that you feel the need to lecture us on other examples of adaptions in film? I'm pretty sure that we all understand what it means and will continue to be done in other films.

I don't mean it as lecturing. I'm a writer. I like to explore and develop ideas. So my comments sometimes come out as essays.

Understandable. It's just sometimes it's irritating. I should apologize for the way I put it.

Except for the whole "United Colors of Benetton" rainbow coalition thing where all the different stereotypically criminal ethnic groups are working together for no apparent reason.

There was a reason. It's called: We have a problem with Batman...what do we do?
