Well, we've had the 80s music thread, the 90s music thread, and seeing as the current decade has only a few months left to run, now would be a good time to review the years 2000-2009 in popular music. OK, the music of the last 10 years has been nothing but rubbish, I hear you say. [What he said - everyone] I thought that too when I thought about the music from the previous decade themed threads - and how wrong I was proven, with the (mostly good) memories flooding back from classic hits and long-forgotten gems. Perhaps by trawling through the good, the bad and the ugly of the 2000s others may feel the same way too? [No - everyone else] Some of the songs I liked from the last 10 years anyway (your mileage may vary): "Burn Baby Burn" - Ash "New Born" - Muse "My Doorbell" - The White Stripes "I Believe In A Thing Called Love" - The Darkness "Don't Mug Yourself" - The Streets "When The Sun Goes Down" - Arctic Monkeys "Feel Good Inc." - Gorillaz "Crazy" - Gnarls Barkley "The Importance of Being Idle" - Oasis "Ooh Wee" - Mark Ronson feat. Ghostface, Trife & Nate Dogg "Ooh La La" - Goldfrapp "Oh My God" - Kaiser Chiefs (no, the decade was not known for its imaginative song titles... ) "Paper Planes" - MIA "Chelsea Dagger" - The Fratellis One interesting thing was that at one point, the same record was released by three different bands, under different titles: "Take Me Out" - Franz Ferdinand "Paralyzer" - Finger Eleven "Shut Up And Let Me Go" - The Ting Tings [[facepalm] - everyone]
Anything from LCD Soundsystem For example LCD Soundsystem - All My Friends - Better Quality Extended Version or LCD Soundsystem - North American Scum or LCD Soundsystem - Movement or LCD Soundsystem - Losing My Edge or LCD Soundsystem - Daft Punk Is Playing You get the idea
I'll add some that come to mind: "Obsolete" - Mute Math (If you watch nothing else in the list, watch this) "Your Ex-Lover is Dead" - Stars "Ohio" - Over the Rhine (no video, unfortunately) "To the Dogs or Whoever" - Josh Ritter "The Cure for Pain" - Jon Foreman "Empire" - Kasabian (I'm always impressed by this video's production values)
Bloodhound Gang - The Bad Touch Linkin Park • In The End Melanie C - Never Be The Same Again Morcheeba - Otherwise Novastar - Wrong The Presidents of the USA - Lump Queens Of The Stone Age - Go With The Flow Reef - Come Back Brighter Sugababes - Overload Within Temptation - Ice Queen 3 Doors Down - Kryptonite
It is. I'm not sure of the year, but I know Weird Al spoofed it on his 1996 album, so... yeah. Anyway, songs that I've enjoyed: "No Cars Go" - Arcade Fire "16 Military Wives" - The Decemberists "Frontier Psychiatrist" - The Avalanches (This one wins for trippiest music video, too) "Walk Away" - Barlow "Too Little Too Late" - Barenaked Ladies "A Lifetime" - Better Than Ezra "Yer Not the Ocean" - The Tragically Hip "Berlin" - Black Rebel Motorcycle Club "1985" - Bowling For Soup (I'm not sure why I like this song... normally, I loathe most of the pop-punk music of the late-90s and early-2000s) "Comfort Eagle" - Cake "We Used to be Friends" - The Dandy Warhols (Excuse the oddness of this video, there didn't seem to be an official one) "Someone to Love" - Fountains of Wayne "Are You Gonna Be My Girl?" - Jet "Still Alive" - GLaDOS\Jonathan Coulton "Brother Down" - Sam Roberts
Some more highlights of the decade: "Yeah!" - Usher feat. Lil' John & Ludacris "Rock Your Body" - Justin Timberlake "Lose Yourself" - Eminem "Crazy In Love" - Beyoncé feat. Jay-Z It was also the decade where everyone wanted to "do" Mashup: "Freak Like Me" - Sugababes (taking on both Adina Howard and the Tubeway Army) "All Summer Long" - Kid Rock (melding Warren Zevon and Lynyrd Skynyrd) "Genie in a Bottle" - Speedway (citing the famous Christina Aguilera and The Strokes mashup) "Being Nobody" - Richard X vs. Liberty X (the same guy behind the Sugababes track, this time merging The Human League and Rufus & Chaka Khan)

Frankly as far as I'm concerned this decade has been brilliant - all you need to do is look beyond the dross that fills the charts and it soon easily holds up to the 90s and 80s.
"Our long national nightmare is over." - President Gerald R. Ford Then again, each decade from the 1970's on seems to be worse than the last one. I fear what sort of drivel will be in store for the 2010's. Time for some nostalgia bars like the Cafe 80's in Back to the Future Part II, I guess....
I would love that! But I do think that each decade has had its share of crap and its share of good stuff. The difference with this current decade and decades past is that there's virtually no good "mainstream" music anymore. I mean, there's a little here and there, but for the most part I don't even understand how people can listen to the radio anymore.
One persons favourite song is another persons bane... Different strokes and all that... There have been plenty of songs in the mainstream that i didn't like... As well as bands or artists whose cds would end up in my trashcan if someone gave them to me on my birthday or at christmas time...
Hmm what was good about 2000's... let's see, we've got a whole bunch of generic indie garbage and plenty of horrible gangsta rap for the most part, then there was the whole terrible nu-metal + pop-punk early in the decade. The shockingly low quality of the majority of the mainstream music in this decade represents the ever decreasing sophistication and intelligence of the lowest common denominator. I honestly can't think of much mainstream music from this decade that's actually any good, and most of the good stuff sounds like it belongs in ths 90's anyway.
