Potential final incarnation. There is enough wiggle room using known information to say that a Time Lord can have more than 13 lives.

If DW is still popualr and pulling in enough ratings do we really think the Beeb will stop making it?

I remember when Colin Baker was the Doctor, when I first started watching the series. I figured I would be REALLY old when the Doctor reached his final incarnation. I was right!

A part of me thinks the show should end with the beginning of the regeneration sequence of the 13th Doctor.

Stan died in American dad when the world ended 3 or four years ago.

    He went to hell.

Escaped, then after he clawed his way up to heaven, it turned out to be life with his family on Earth preapocalypse.

I'm absolutely thrilled by the choice. He's excellent in "Children of Earth" and "The Fires of Pompeii" and I'm excited by the prospect of an older actor playing The Doctor. When he was first rumored, I thought he would be a great pick but I never thought it would actually true. For once, a Doctor Who rumor came true!
Interesting observation and I think you're right. I'm looking forward to his performance even more.

I think it's a good choice. I don't know Peter Capaldi's work too well so of course i'm apprehensive while I wait but it's interesting to see an older Doctor again.
I do agree with some saying you'll lose some of the fangirls by casting an older actor. Smith was hip and cool not just as the Doctor but in real life too. But Peter is gonna bring a maturity to the series much like Patrick Stewart did to the next generation.

    Great actor (and director).

Might even tempt me to watch DW again.

I think he should be a paradox -- a closed time-like loop -- with the last Doctor becoming either the Other or the first doctor, depending on whether the Cartmel Masterplan is adhered to. There's scope for telling stories outside the usual linearisation of his time stream as well.

Hard to adhere to something that didn't actually exist.

So Andrew Cartmel has been written out of history -- it's started already...

He had a direction and a vague idea of where he wanted to go - something that was picked up in the books - over time, fans have morphed this in their minds into a highly detailed plan for the TV show - but it never existed.

Even leaving that aside that a showrunner in 2014 should be beholden to someone's unused undeveloped ideas from almost 30 years ago is just silly.

Like many other people I think the decision is great. I look forward to seeing what Peter is like as the Doctor.

Not sure what the OP was expecting but I'd say the result was emphatic.

Yes, it was just my fanwankery. I didn't expect anyone to take it seriously.

I wonder if Armando Iannucci is interested in doing a script.
