Before leavin' Austin last night, I used a pass to see The Way for free at Barton Creek AMC.

Written for the screen, produced & directed by Emilio Estevez, its the story of Tom, played by Martin Sheen, goin' on a pilgrimmage to honor the death of his son, played by Emilio.

I think it would have been better if Estevez had cut down on his ghost's appearances...it was a bit too much, I think.

Still, a decent movie, worth checkin' out if ya have the time.

I'm back at my brother's now, he has HBO & Cinemax, and a few DVDs on his shelf that I haven't seen before...

The Debt: Not a great movie, but watchable, and I'm happy to see Sam Worthington in a more dramatic role. His accent was still lackluster at times, but he's definitely a better dramatic actor than an action hero. Jessica Chastain, in everything this year, was also good, as were the older versions of the characters, including Helen Mirren, great as usual.

Conan O'Brien Can't Stop: Entertaining if slight documentary about the talk show host's tour that took place during his contractually forced time off of television. I'm surprised by how much of an asshole Conan is allowed to be in much of it, actually. I was excepting a more white-washed look at him, but the movie exceeded my expectations there.

Contagion: Finally, an outbreak thriller that doesn't throw the science in the garbage. At times, it has trouble juggling so many different characters (Marion Cotillard vanishes for much of the movie, which apparently was an editing choice made late in post-production), but everyone in the ensemble gets at least one chance to shine. There's also a few moments where the scientists and doctors are explaining things to each other that they should already know. I'm especially thinking of Dr. Cheever's briefing to Dr. Mears -- nothing he says should be news to her. Obviously, this is for the benefit of the audience, but it's one of the few times that a pretty smart movie treats its audience like it’s dumb.

1941: Caught this at a special screening with a big audience that knew the movie well -- definitely the best way to see this film. It’s still the least interesting entry into Spielberg’s early filmography, but it has a great score, one of the finest comedy ensembles aver assembled, and a couple of standout sequences (the USO dance sequence is brilliant) that make up for the whole.

Gone with the Wind: Finally able to see this film all the way through, I’m pretty comfortable proclaiming that I’ll never do it again. Scarlett O’Hara is a heartless, conniving woman who behaves like a child from beginning to end. As I feared, it’s an unrepentantly racist movie, too – and I don’t just mean the characters. No, the opening title crawl makes the movie’s point of view quite clear. Even the big set pieces aren’t that exciting, which surprised me, given how expensive the film was to make. Really, it’s watchable only for Clark Gable as Rhett Butler (an obvious model for Rick Blaine, Han Solo, and many other cinematic rouges), and he’s absent for much of the running time.

    164 movies this year.

That's the point. She's iron-willed but ultimately largely responsible for her own problems, and ends the movie deservedly alone.
It's considerably less racist than the novel, believe it or not.

I rewatched the 2002 Best Picture winning adaptation of Chicago directed by Rob Marshall on Sunday.

Also, thanks to Netflix, I watched the 1998 Kurt Russell actioner Soldier and also Michael Apted's The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.

Chicago is still magnificent, and I've been humming/signing along with the soundtrack in my car all week.

Soldier was visually semi-interesting, and it was neat seeing some familiar faces (Michael Chiklis pre-badass on The Shield) but it was mostly an awful film. It had some interesting ideas, but the execution was just subpar.

The Voyage of the Dawn Treader was an improvement over Prince Caspian I thought, but still left something to be desired. Arguably the standout performance is from the petulant boy who plays Eustace, and the scene at the end where Reep leaves for "Aslan's country" is heartwarming. But given the end of the film, I'm not sure I know how they can continue the story in a fourth film, and I sure as hell barely remember anything from the books, which I read in elementary school. It was neat though to see Bruce Spence show up, after having worked on Legend of the Seeker and watching dailies at lunch every day

The Jake G and Anne Hathaway movie from earlier this year that got rave reviews most places. It was a touching movie of self discovery but I think most of it's focus was on Anne's bare upper body for large portions of the first half of the movie. They both gave a good performance of two flakey self absorbed individuals who find something greater as a whole than separate but I just didn't feel like it was an "A" movie.

For my count I'm normally only counting first viewings or viewings of films I've not seen in at least 10 years. I'm making an exception here with X-Files 2. My ex-girlfriend has spent the last 6 months watching my collection and saw the first movie at the time between seasons. She came over to watch this one cause it's just been sitting idle on my shelf. I recall being disappointed in the film when I saw it in the theater. That really wasn't the right call because it's a good enough X-Files story it just isn't a great X-Files theatrical story. Having waited 10yrs since the first one and 6 years since the series ended this movie should have had more going on. Doggett was needed for sure, Reyes could've been the captured agent they were looking for all while keeping the other story elements in place if they had to go with that story. If XF2 had been a different movie that had that theatrical punch I'm sure we'd be talking about the filming of XF3 and the storyline involving the 2012 conspiracy mentioned at the close of the series. Instead it's just talk. Again, X-Files: I Want to Believe as a story is a good one just was a let down at the time for what it should've delivered imo.

Ever since I got old enough to realize that Adam Sandler isn't funny I've had a troubled relationship with comedy, because I've found many of the most acclaimed classic comedies to be overrated too (my journey through Preston Sturges' filmography yielded a couple of gems but a number of highly rated films that I didn't think too much of). It's a hard genre, in my opinion, and I find that I generally prefer drama. This is one of the classic comedies I've seen that really delivers. This is the first movie I've seen with Marilyn Monroe in a lead role (she was in All About Eve in a small role), and she's delightful, as are Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon.

Guess which movie franchise had a marathon on HBO Family today!

I've seen the original Heston film, but never the sequels, at least not all the way through. I do have vague memories of my brother watchin' 'em a lot when we were kids.

Beneath was pretty good, especially the reveal of the humans' true selves.

Escape was one I had never seen the endin' for...I had no idea!

Conquest is on now. Ceaser just started the fight against the humans.

    - edit, to add -

After the Apes marathon, I switched over to Knight and Day, the Tom Cruise / Cameron Diaz action movie that bombed last summer.

And yeah, it was a bad movie.

Cameron Diaz was too ditzy and Tom Cruise just oozed whatever it is he oozes these days when he thinks he's cute & charmin'.

Also, it seemed the laws of physics didn't apply to the universe of the movie, and timin' was everything. It all happened in the nick of time, and everyone took their turn.

Which version of Conquest of the Planet of the Apes was it? You'll know by the ending. The director's cut ends bleakly, with Caesar doing nothing to stop an execution by an angry mob. The theatrical cut creatively edits the footage and adds some new dialogue to show Caesar talking down the apes from committing any more violence.

I prefer the director's cut by a wide margin.

The version I saw had the mob beatin' the governor down to the ground, Ceaser & the black sympathizer argue a bit, and then Ceaser made a speech about God's love while the gorillas & chimps listen to him & the city burns around 'em.

    End of movie.

"Batman: Year One" B + . A very strong adaptation of Frank Miller's esteemed graphic novel that retells Batman's origin story in the modern era. Bryan Crantston is arguably the star of the DVD as his voices newly transferred Chicago cop Jim Gordon. He was so good that he very well could play him in live action film. Ben McKenzie voices Bruce Wayne and Batman. McKenzie does a good job, but I thought his Bruce Wayne was off, I could hear too much of Ben and not enough of the character. His Batman was dead on though. Raw, unrefined and naive. Eliza Duskhu voices Selina Kyle who has a reduced role in the film which doesn't focus on her. She is Catwoman though. The animation is crisp and smooth...almost reminded me of a TimmVerse style crossed with "Gotham Knights". Christopher Drake's score was amazing. It is short though and if you're looking for more...then this won't be for you but if you go into familiar with the graphic novel you will be pleased.

With George Stevens at the helm and Jean Arthur and Cary Grant headlining (along with Ronald Colman), I assumed this was a screwball comedy (the premise also sounds like a comedy), but it's not. Well, it has screwball elements to it, but large stretches of it are a drama about socio-economics and the law. It's never unpleasant to watch, but it's not particularly good; Cary Grant is really miscast in the role of a firebrand lower-class agitator, and at the end you'd really rather if Arthur ended up with Colman (who's easily the best character in the film). Notably, the movie contains what is easily the least caricatured black character I can recall seeing in these old 30s/40s films.

You'll seldom see a more persuasive case for why teens in the 1950s so desperately needed rock and roll.

This is a very effective character study, featuring some great performances (Cloris Leachman's final scene is almost certainly what got her the Oscar). The main things that don't work as well as they might have generally relate to the main character, who's not nearly as compelling as many of those around him (and compared to Jeff Bridges and Cybill Shepherd, Timothy Bottoms didn't go on to have much of a career; he was a go-to George Bush impersonator for much of the 2000s). The death of his mentally retarded friend is a random and forced moment in what is otherwise mostly natural.

The Girl From Monday: It's an independent film about a world where consumerism has run amok and people are treated like stocks with value. Part of the story follows an alien from the constellation Monday who takes on the form of a woman and begins her search for another like her. This "other" came to Earth a decade earlier and took human form, but can't return because he got swept up in all the trappings of being a human in a consumerist society. The movie stars Bill Sage, who looks like the love child of Brad Pitt and Robert Redofrd, Sabrina Lloyd and Tatiana Abracos as the girl from Monday, her only role it seems. The movie itself has some unusual cinematography and drags quite a bit until the last half hour.

The directorial debut of British comedian/writer Joe Cornish, frequent collaborator of Edgar Wright. A genre film with a slight comic bent, typical of their style, in this case our main characters are a group of teenaged London hoodlums who find themselves in the middle of an alien invasion. Nicely done, though I think the stabs at social relevance don't amount to a lot.

This Jake Gyllenhaal and Michelle Monaghan film from this past Spring was pretty decent. When I saw it was 1.5hrs I was a bit concerned but it played out well. I'm still not sure entirely how the last 5 min played out.
The movie is about a soldier who is jumping/shifting into the body of another man with similar size, height and most importantly brain pattern. His mission, in 8 min increments, is to find out the bomber of a Chicago commuter train.
This may be a plot hole or maybe I missed the explanation but time for him stands still while an alternate timeline is played out each time he jumps using the Source Code??
I know that Doctor Rutledge was attempting an explanation at some point. If I understood it correctly then...
one Rutledge(Jake) ends up permanently in the body he's been jumping and the Source Code team has yet to have it's first field test while our original Rutledge is dead and the train did explode but the Source Code team stopped the dirty van bomb.
Good movie and it seems it qualifies as a hit based on the numbers I see at BOM.

    Closing in on 100 films.

The Last Man on Earth - AMC on Demand

AMC on Demand has a selection of classic zombie films and the Vincent Price vampire classic. I'd never seen it, so I decided to give it a shot, since I like Vincent Price.

I like it. I liked that there was some intelligence, and that the only known civilization was made up of the cured who considered Price as the last human to be the enemy.

I haven't seen Heston's Omega Man, which is the same story, but I like The Last Man on Earth a bit more than the theatrical cut of I Am Legend.

Sometimes, ya can't go wrong with the classics...

60% of the way through my Cary Grant box set. This is the earliest film in the collection, released in 1937, which launched Grant's career into the stratosphere and developed his screen persona (supposedly heavily based on the director, Leo McCarey). Grant is paired here with Irene Dunne, a name in the 1930s whose films (other than this one) have largely been forgotten. The film obviously inspired the subsequent (and, I think, superior) His Girl Friday to a large extent, right down to the presence of Ralph Bellamy as the guy who loses out to Grant for the leading lady. It's quite entertaining, and, in contrast to many other films of the genre, allows both halves of the couple to be sociopathically determined to get the other back at times.

    73. Star Wars: A New Hope - Blu-ray Transfer: B+. Not going to review these movies but I will grade the transfers. They look great on Blu-ray, with A New Hope suffering the most from lack of quality source elements. Some shots do look soft.

    74. Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back - Blu-ray transfer: A. I thought this movie looked sharper overall than A New Hope and is certainly the best I've ever seen it on home video. Not quite reference manual but still quite good for an older film.

    75. Pulp Fiction (rewatch, Blu-ray) - Blu-ray transfer: A. Speaking only of the Blu-ray transfer since I just reviewed the movie recently. This release is generating a lot of controversy online due to the high contrast levels in certain scenes. I personally think it looks great and that the contrast levels in those scenes (mostly daylight and in the diner) are intended by the director. Best for the viewer to judge for themselves.

    76. Brazil (rewatch) - B+. Mostly works on the level of spectacle but on that level it really succeeds. Has a few scenes of truly brilliant satire. Interestingly atypical roles for both Michael Palin and Robert Deniro here.

    77. Citizen Kane (rewatch) - A. A landmark film in terms of special effects, narrative, and cinematography. The opening 3-4 minutes are spellbinding. I am not sure if the use of light and dark was meant to symbolize something or was merely meant to be eye-catching, but it was cetainly memorable. I had seen this movie before, but not in many years.

    78. Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters - C. Like a long, mediocre episode of the series. Not quite as weird as I thought it was going to be. Every now and then I like to watch a stupid or trippy cartoon and this is not a good example of either really.
