If any one is interest the book "The Quiet Earth" by Craig Harrison has recently been republished (in July this year) as both a paperback and a Kindle edition. It looks like the paperback version has more or less sold out though there is a copy or two available at Abebooks. The novel was originally published in 1981 and reprinted in 1986 after the movie of the book came out. Since then it has become a hard to get book with copies selling for several hundred dollars each. This book has been on my wishlist for years so I just bought a paperback and Kindle edition.
Cool, I've only seen the movie, which I love... didn't even know it was a book. Opinion here is split on it IIRC, some love and some are bored by its deliberate pacing...
I didn't know it was a book either. For some strange reason, I've never gotten around to seeing the movie, though it looks like a real Science Fiction story. I should put both book and DVD in my Shopping Cart.
I recall seeing the film on cable, never gave the book a whirl though. But, since it's on Kindle now, I guess it's as good a time as any. And.... done
The book is quite different from the film, I have a copy of 1986 reprint, it is certainly worth a read.
Indeed, isn't it the intent of the book's ending that... Spoiler: novel Hobson is dead and this is his hell - doomed to repeat the same events for eternity ? I know it doesn't have the punch that the movie's ending does.
I am just over 40% through the book and it has been very similar to the movie. However I have just got to the part of the book which the movie starts to diverges from the book Spoiler: the book The Quiet Earth Hobson has just met Api. In the movie he met a female survivor first.
Sadly, Bruno Lawrence (who played Hobson in the film) died - of lung cancer, I think - a few years ago.
One of my top ten SF films. Knew it was based on a novel, but never read it. Will now. Thanks. Sir Rhosis
If anyone wants to view the movie, the full version is available on Youtube. [yt]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LiArDP3wh4I[/yt]
I have finished reading the book and I really enjoyed it. Like the ending of the movie, the ending of the novel is somewhat ambiguous.
