I loved Green Lantern, and I've seen no reason so far not to expect Captain America to be just as enjoyable.

Wish I could see it this weekend, but I'm finishing up a big project that's going to leave no time or energy for other things. Well, maybe Sunday evening, if I'm real lucky...

Who's doing a midnight show? I'm tempted to do so cause I have Friday off but I'm seeing it for sure Friday night with a group of friends. What they don't know won't hurt them right?

Ebert gives it three stars and likes it a good deal better than Green Lantern or Thor. Maybe the fanboisie will refrain from bombing his mailbox this time. [IMG]

So who liked it at outlets known to most?
    Ebert
    NY Daily News
    Chicago Truibune
    NY Times
    Boston Herald
    Hollywood.com
    Entertainment Weekly
    MSN Movies
    Orlando Sentinel
    Rolling Stone Magazine

Well then who at known mass outlets didn't like it?
    Variety
    Metromix.com
    Slant Magazine
    The Hollywood Reporter

It's currently at Fresh with 67% and 45 reviews in but it's been bouncing around. Not yet made it up to 70%, been in the 60's and the film will get at least 1/2 as many more reviews to come in so where it'll land is still undetermined. Hope it stays Fresh though for the sake of people who will use RT as a decision point.

After they ditched their long-time critic, I don't put much stock in Variety's opinion anymore.

It's odd that the trade outlets like THR and Variety aren't sold on it; it's not like they exactly have biases against praising commercial crowd-pleasers.

Although I laughed at this remark in THR's review:

I guess that goes along with the "you and I are alike" dialogue. Sometimes the hoariest of cliches work for the material.

Nor is the review an real pan of the movie - it's a bit more mixed than that:

I wouldn't be surprised if many critics are just burnt out on superhero movies. You can sense that most of them don't think much of the genre to BEGIN with, and now Captain America is the fourth such film coming out this year.

It's at it's highest RT score so far of 69%, hope the next reviews to hit are positive and it gets pushed into the 70th percentile.

I actually prefer Metacritic myself, and it's at a 66 there, with 17 positive reviews, 4 mixed, and 0 negative.

    ^^^^
I did list MetaCritic on the first post but was keeping it easy as scores came in by limiting updates to RT. Your link to MetaCritic will come in handy for someone, thanks.

RottenTomatoes got the score to nudge up and is now 71%

It opens next week here, and the previews I've seen on TV sure make it a go see film.

Re: Captain America: The First Avenger-Review, Discuss, Grade, Sequel,

Just read the reviews from the Toronto Star and the Toronto Sun. neither seemed to really care much for the film, but there was something rather dismissive in their write-ups giving me the impression perhaps they had it in for the film before they even got to the screening. Whereas other reviews I've read online appreciate the film's style harkening back to older fare the Star and Sun critics seem to think it wouldn't fly with contemporary audiences.

Oh yeah, audiences today are so much more sophisticated.

They do chime in with other reviews opining that the 3D is wasted in this movie. I actually am quite interested in seeing this film, but I have zero interest in 3D (it doesn't work for me) and I resent paying extra for something I don't want. But I fear my local cinema won't have it available in 2D and it's (partly) for that reason I haven't yet seen Thor or Green Lantern.

    A-

Went to the midnight show tonight.

Pretty good movie, can't argue a bit with the castin'. Hate that they tease the Red Skull all through the first half of the movie, only to have his reveal in the trailer.

Be sure to stick around after the credits, 'cause there's a bonus scene AND a teaser for The Avengers!

Saw the midnight showing, and I believe they nailed it. Outstanding, fun film that managed to integrate Cap's history in a believable way while also carrying forward the shared movie universe in a manner that was natural and not forced. But the main thing that put this movie over the top for me was the human element. The presentation had alot of heart to it, and that's only fitting for a Captain America movie.

Overall, I think it's the best Marvel studios has put out since the first Iron Man film.

Awww, the poor critics. They'd better get used to it, since next year we're getting new Batman, Superman, Spider-Man and Ghost Rider films, plus the Avengers film.
