I miss the days when the studio would let ST films destroy the Enterprise.

But that led to the days where it was required, like with Generations.

I remember folks wondering what the Enterprise would look like in ST IV. I was hoping it wouldn't be Excelsior, but it would be a refit, with some minor changes to freshen it up a bit.

dunno if all thats true or not but it would seem the 'logical' choice - to have had April in command of the original Enterprise (im talking pretty much the same model as used in TOS) and some big star as April (Hanks or Ford etc)
it would have certainly established clearly why the enterprise looked alot different to how it did in TOS! It would have firmly established that this IS an "alternate" timeline, and thematically set up the notion that this is a totally "new" Enterprise that will have "new" adventures. And would have explained Kirk’s infatuation with the Enterprise–it was his father’s ship.
i know the NCC1701 wasnt launched until 2245 (according to the 'official' Chronology) but im sure they couldve just ignored that and had it launched earlier to serve the need of the story

id have liked to have seen Nero wipe out TNG at the start of ST09…sort of a tie in with the Countdown comic. start off straight in the thick of the action with Patrick Stewart and the TNG guys on the Ent E in a desperate battle with the Narada then blown up trying to prevent Nero from killing Spock Prime before they both get pulled into the blackhole...then the opening credits 'S T A R T R E K'.....then Spocks birth (from the deleted scenes)....then the Kelvin destruction/birth of Kirk

it wouldve established just how powerful Neros ship was in the face of 24th century Federation technology and really wouldve hammered home just how badass Kirk, Spock etc are in eventually stopping Nero…plus itd have given TNG a proper send off/passing the baton after the lame one in Nemesis going out in a blaze of glory stopping Nero destroying Spock (its not as they would be coming back in another film now anyway) and there would have been some revenge there for TNG killing off Kirk Prime!:) (plus in the alternate timeline Picard and Co could have a different outcome so not really dead)

Blowing up the TNG crew as a proper send-off? No, thanks!

Apparently, early versions of the ST'09 story featured wholesale destruction all the way to and including Earth, and early versions of Countdown featured the deaths of the entire TNG crew. It was the people behind Star Trek Online, complaining that it would totally wreck their (then forthcoming) game's plot that led to the destruction being scaled back to Romulus in the movie and mortal injuries to Worf in the comic.

So a non-canon video game dictated the direction of an entire Star Trek movie?

I would have thought it would be the other way around...

IMDb trivia is input by users (and can be edited by anyone); thus, it should not be considered completely reliable information.

Partly true, in this case (the part about Orci and Kurtzman not being allowed to destroy the Enterprise) and partly not (the bit about Robert April has no identifiable source and is probably nothing more than fan-generated wishful thinking.) All covered (with a link to the Orci/Kurtzman interview) in Post #158, upthread. ↑

Actually, my understanding is it was more than just the Online game. Basically CBS/Paramount didn't want the Prime Universe to be completely wiped out since Prime Universe merchandise (novels, comics, and games) still generates a profit and they didn't want to walk away from that completely.

That's sort of what I heard, except that it was either a CBS mandate given to Paramount or simply something Paramount did to keep CBS happy.

But is killing off the TNG crew the same thing as wiping out the Prime Universe?

wonder which TNG cast would have been on Ent E bridge if there had been an opening TNG destruction scene. My guess is Picard, B4/Data, Worf & Geordi :D (but no Riker, Troi, Crusher :( )

Well, I'm going to guess that a Trek product starring Picard, Worf, and Data/B-4 is going to find a more interested market than the equivalent product starring Ezri Dax, Harry Kim, and Captain Holloway.

It wouldn't work as there would be too much stylistic and casting discontinuity between TNG / Berman era to what we see from the opening scene where the Narada enters the 23rd century.

Even Generations was like watching 2 different films in one after the Enterprise B scene. The first scene felt like a classic TMP era movie, and then bang, you're now watching a season 6, season 7 episode of TNG.

the Ent E would obviously have been given a JJ make over and the TNG cast in new futuristic uniforms...

wouldve been great to see TNG given the really big budget treatment even if just for 5mins (and then blown to s**t:D)

The Enterprise E and TNG crew appearing sounds awesome.
Just don't like the idea of them getting blown up lol

It'd be nice to see the stylistic differences between eras.

Something like that should happen in a future film, with maybe even the TOS Enterprise next to the NuEnterprise
xD

In this Alternate timeline, the TOS Enterprise being the one April had that got decommsioned earlier than it did in the prime timeline, to make way for the NuEnterprise.

It's a pity (though understandable) that when that Enterprise appeared in the comics, we didn't get to see much detail. A cinematic treatment would have been glorious.

Would love to see someone take the little bit we did see of it in that comic and try to extrapolate a different version from the Enterprise that Kirk commands. Maybe having it be closer in size to the TOS-E, not having the neck torpedo tube, and some other little details, maybe borrowed from the Kelvin, only nice and shiny.

To me it wouldn't be Starfleet without an Enterprise in the fleet. So i'm glad that, at least in the comics, we got some idea that Enterprises may have existed in that long stretch of time.
