Actually, the initial response to the game and launch was much larger then Atari or Cryptic expected. (FYI - They had 1 million activated keys during the open beta phase - and I'm not talking about how many they sent out, I'm talking actually active and logging in during that period). If you played Champions Online at launch, they had the Public Test Server up within 24 hours post launch.

So, why are they bringing up the STO PTS just now (a month post launch)? Because they threw the hardware designated for the PTS into the 'Live' server farm and did a further hardware order to further boost capacity. How well they are doing on subscriber retention won't really be ascertainable until about 3 or 6 months out.

beta numbers dont mean much... it was a free demo that people could check out... i know about 6 of my co-workers jumped into the beta, but didn't purchase the game because the beta was so underwhelming (i am sure many more of my co-workers checked it out also). i was in the beta and havent purchased the game.

it's great that they had a lot of people at first, but the fact that they so quickly dropped the price and added more free time seems dubious at best.

Can i ask you please what its like connection wise when you do get online, i have been keeping a close eye on the game and the only thing stopping me getting it at this moment is that it seems EU/UK players seem to be posting the same stuff about issues caused by not having a EU/UK server, which seems from their posts is leading too major lagging, rubber banding, connection issue, long loading, disconnections.....all stuff they are complaining about.

So whats it like for all you here in the EU/UK if i can ask...i don't know how many times i have had the game ready for one more click on direct downloads delivery when i see all the great screen shots and people seem to be enjoying it, then i find more EU/UK complaints about these issues.

I don't have any major issues and I'm playing from Germany.
Sometimes a few lag issues and rubberbanding, but mostly when I forget to turn of background downloads.
Otherwise it`s working fine for me.
Sometimes I get a disconnect but can reenter the game right away and exactly where I left it.

Bought regular edition at the $20 off Atari sale and activated last night. I had previously been in the open beta and used a 5 day buddy key to level to LT10. Within an hour last night I hit LTCOM1 (note: spend skillups or you wont level).

I'm an eng but I went in the direction of a escort, making a kitbash of the 3 designs with one piece from each. It looks fantastic. I have two tac officers, a science and an eng off, and I myself am an eng so I have a ton of powers to choose from. Shortly afterwards I discovered the power trainer in Sol (previously ignored him), promoted both tac and my science officer, and bought high yield torpedo, cannon rapid fire 1 (same name but different from cannon spread that I got by default), hazard emitters and I learned rotate shield frequency.

Throw this all together via bridge officer powers and i'm all but unkillable. Anything attacks me I aux shields, rotate shield frequency so they are more durable while recharging, and hazard team if i've taken hull damage. My escort is fitted with dual heavy disruptor cannons and I got a lucky quantum mark 2 drop, so I basically open with rapid fire and activate high yield after the first quantum goes off so the next quantum is a triple punch. Most ships have no shields by the time the 3 quantums arrive and pretty much just die. Rear mount is a phaser array mk2, does the job. Mines just dont seem that great to me atm. I can take on the flagship gank squad in deep space encounters and stand a pretty good chance, with any support at all its good game.

In short.. i'm loving ST:O. Space shootups appeal to me. And the fact i'm putting this much thought/planning into something that, in WoW terms, is basically a level 11 character has me kind of hopeful.

I'm taking it slow in the levelling dept, I figure this isnt a game you want to push hardcore for max rank. If level 11 is fun what's the rest of the game like? o.o

^^^ Sounds how my Lt lvl 10 cruiser is set up to. Picked up disruptors as drops and picked up quantum IIs on a drop as well, so with those and my BOs full of either shield rotation, torp spreads, or shield rebuffs, it's hard for the bad guys to shut me down in normal space.

Ran into some trouble in the Briar Patch with all that Metreon Gas, but whaddya gonna do.

Cryptic just better roll out some Nebula class Cruisers by the time I get to tier 3, that's all I gotta say...

You can get cheap Heavy Disruptor Mk3 off exchange - well I thought 1500ish was cheap, considering Mk2's were more expensive. I have one Mk3 and one Mk2 (drop) stuck on the front of my escort with the quantum. I did the briar patch last night as the escort, having levelled beforehand. I dont know what those damn cannons were doing but they went striaght through my shields some of the time.

Rapid Fire + Disruptors = lol. Just be sure to turn off full impulse at the ~13km range and drift the last little bit in while your power levels return to normal. Going straight from full impulse to battle can be brutal. Evasive Maneuvers if you're super impatient.

Lastly if you haven't done it remap spacebar from fire all phasers to fire all weapons. Unless you have mines I guess?

No real problems here with connectivity unless the instance is very crowded (At the moment I get disconnected everytime I transfer to Starbase 1 or to sector space from Sol, because the system is always so crowded). If I do get disconnected I just reconnect and continue from where I left off. It even re-adds me to any team I was part of when the disconnect happened.

You need a certain skillpoint expenditure to level up, as do your officers. If you press U then click an officer, on their summary tab (whatever it's called) you'll see a promote button. It should tell you on the screen what criteria they need to reach for you to be able to promote them.

This page tells you what criteria you need to reach yourself in terms of skill point expenditure in order to level. It's a very good site in general for ST:O stuff.

    http://theenginescannaetakeit.wordpress.com/articles-3/character-basics/

You need to spend some points to hit LT from Ensign, and you need to hit LT11 and spend 6700ish skillpoints to hit LTCOMM, etc. Your officers cant be the same rank as you so only once you hit LTCOMM can you promote your ensign BO's to LT. It's a little unintuitive but it kind of works.

Well i took the plunge and bought it, unfortunately paypay decided to pay by bloody e-cheque(My card detail had expired by two days) and even after updating it i could not cancel the e-cheque and send a instant payment..... so i will need to wait till the bloody thing clears 22/3 is estimating, before i can start downloading the thing.

Talk about gutted, bloody paypal....oh well i suppose it will give me a chance to clean out the pC and get it up to tip top condition for the game.

You need to promote your BOs to unlock higher skills.
You can promote them if you yourself are at least two ranks above them and have collected enough starfleet merrits and spent enough skillpoints on the officers.
