Especially, considering, the resemblance is likely to make some fans even more intense with their "Cast Sean Pertwee and his Father" cries.
Not the same - it was purple - I think that went to auction a long time ago. The red lined cape was only part of his first season costume. Though the actual cape Jon wore to his first publicity was his own grandfathers!
Despite the family resemblance I used to be of the opinion that Sean was such a different type of actor to his dad that it would actually be hard to find an actor less suited to portray the 3rd Doctor unless he was reinvented as the had bastard cockney Pertwe Jr. has basically made his stock in trade. But when I saw the Poirot he was was in I was surprised. He's playing posh and obviously his mental image of "Posh" is his dad as he's basically doing a full on impression that actually kind of works (even if he actually manages to be a good deal camper).
That Poirot proves he isn't just a tough guy, and he can be quite effete when he wants to be, he obviously just doesn't get much of a chance these days!
I found out about 15 years ago that Sean's dad was Jon Pertwee, and I was absolutely surprised. But I only found that out from looking up his already-then considerable resume, and gave no thought to the name. He refuses to play Three, and I respect that, as he's a guy who's forged his own career. Imo, he only lives in the shadow of his father to Whovians, and he's built his own name and rep, playing in big blockbusters to quiet indies to regular TV shows for years now. He seems like just a really cool guy all around.
He has indicated that he'd be interested in playing a new incarnation, but not Three. Of course, people can change their minds.
Only revisiting a few of the old favorites right? Pertwee could echo a younger 3rd doctor in the 14th generation
Man, as an Original Series Doctor Who fan himself (and Third Doctor fan in particular!), how much must Capaldi have loved this?
