I think a big part of it too is that it's said by Matt twice. Once, it's like "LOL what...? Did he mispronounce Meteblis?" Twice, it's like "Oh, come ON... How did no one catch that?!"
Forget the pronounciation, don't you realise this is proof the Spiders aren't coming back? 'Cos they must be extinct, or they'd be hunting him to get that crystal! Hold on, it's proof that they are coming back, they just haven't caught up with him yet. Hold on, that's why he says it's wrong: it's a totally different planet that just happens to have blue crystals too! Brain hurting now...
I heard Smith say Meh TEH bill us and first thought okay, some planet where he needs a crystal only why does it sound like Metebelis? I figured IO misheard and then HE DOES IT AGAIN and I realised someone in continuity effed up... The only thing I didn't like about the show... Naturally, I had to come up with a reason so I decided that he really doesn't care for the planet of spiders so spits out the word in disgust as a sort of personal protest. Works for me.
My wife both recognized the name of the planet and knew it was mispronounced. To her instant shame. Slowly becoming one of us...
Exactly. After all the Seventh Doctor developed a Scottish accent, why can't the Eleventh pronounce some place names slightly differently?
Has it not occurred to anyone that, maybe, it was Three who was pronouncing it wrong to begin with? (Another thing he got totally wrong about that planet.)
Three had a lisp, but otherwise he tended to pronounce things correctly. I have seen Planets of the Spiders a couple of times, and I have to admit that I didn't realize that the word had been mispronounced in Hide.
Ther's an old joke about how season 11 is proof that Barry Letts and Terrance Dicks were determined to force Pertwee out. Why? Well, in his last year, they give him a companion called Tharah Jane Thmith, and face him with the Thontaranth, dinothaurth, Exxthilonth, Ithe Warriorth and Thpiderth from Metebelith Three.
Another fantastic episode. That's three in a row now! Loved the Love Story twist - didn't see that coming at all and thought it was brilliant. Definitely fit. Great atmosphere, great guest stars, horrifying creature but with the climax they went with it was perfect. Very intrigued by the continuing "feud" between Clara and the TARDIS.
Three was seven personalities and at least two centuries ago. It's no surprise Eleven might pronounce a word differently.
Much more than two centuries. More like at least four to seven centuries ago. The Third Doctor never gave a straight up age, while The Second Doctor said he was 450 in The Tomb of the Cybermen and The Fourth Doctor said 749 in The Brain of Morbius. Then you throw in the variety of inconsistencies throughout the show, especially since it returned in 2005 because The Doctor has been to known to lie about his age on a number of accounts. The above geek rant aside, you make a valid point. Perhaps it's been so long since The Doctor has even thought of Metebellis III that he forgot how it was pronounced.
Yeah, I'm not terribly familiar with the classic series, so I wasn't sure how old the Doctor was at that time. I just know that at least two centuries had passed between his current regeneration and his last. Thanks for the info, though!
Well the spiders from Metebellis III are chitinous, so the whole thing is probably entirely intentional.
