1980 was an awesome year and this is an awesome version of this song, few quirks on the original.

Oh and the Ska vid reminded me of one of my favorite songs, from 1980:

I still think that slithery, reverb-y guitar figure is pretty cool in the short instrumental breaks between verses.

he fact that it was a film about space with death fun and explosions made a lot of people go and see it on top of the huge star trek cfanbase that has built up over the past 40ish years

1979, one of my favorite years.

I've been waiting for a guide to come
and take me by the hand
could these sensations make me feel
the pleasures of a normal man

From their first and sadly penultimate record.

But cool stuff was going on in the land of the sun as well as pallor-ous isles.. This was released in 1979 as a b-side originally. The HORRORS of Linda Ronstadt's lover..

The Cure is about to disappear from the countdown :(

    From their first album:

    So freaking good..

    10:15 Saturday night
    and the tap drips
    under the strip light
and I'm sitting in the kitchen sink

And finishing off with the Anthem of the Era:

Someone has to educate the young'uns. Been listening to Dead Kennedys all day, forgot how good they were!

    And now 1978.

Tom Robinson released "Glad to be Gay" in 1978 though he wrote it for a Gay Pride march in London in '76. It reached #18 on the UK singles chart however BBC1 refused to broadcast it.

    [yt]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zHG2LJGfEdw[/yt]

Pictures of naked young women are fun
In Titbits and Playboy, page three of The Sun
There's no nudes in xxx News our one magazine
But they still find excuses to call it obscene
Read how disgusting we are in the press
    Telegraphs, people and Sunday Express
Molesters of children, corruptors of youth
It's there in the paper, it must be the truth

Sing if you're glad to be gay

Sing if you're happy that way

And then there's fabulous number.. I remember the first time I heard it I just about died laughing, it was such an excellent taking of the piss. I still think it's excellent.

And now, the end is near
And so I face the final curtain
You cunt, I´m not a queer
I´ll state my case, of which I´m certain

    Nice.

Also from 78, though not very dance-able, I just gotta post it out of love for it:

    Original Studio version.

    Loving the music, everyone!
But... what do we do when we run out of good music years?

We won't run out of good music years, we'll just have to educate ourselves. And once we get down to -212 we are back to the present!

Now I've only got one for 1977 because it is too cool to need any companion pieces. I first heard this on a mixed unlabeled cassette tape in 1980 and I spent years and years trying to track it down. It was one of the first questions I asked when I landed on the internet in '97.. "how can I find the version of Heroes that David Bowie sings in French?" It still took me years and the advent of Youtube to find this, though I got people to confirm that yes, it existed.

btw according to Wikipedia Youtube has only been around since 2005...!!

So, here we are, play it loud, David Bowie singing Heroes in French.

...I think this may be my new favourite thread! I agree with Teacake, we won't run out of good music, we'll just have to look a little harder...

Happy Birthday!! Got any favorites from your birth year?

And now for 1976.. I'm a bit melancholic tonight so I'm going a lot more ambient than is my usual taste.

    The best Kiss song..

    [yt]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uABnCLr4Pp0[/yt]

And this Abba classic is beautiful and full of emotion.. used to bring tears to my eyes without even knowing what it was about.
