Good news everyone! Charlie Brooker's getting a new Wipe show on BBC Two, it's going to cover Screen, News and Gameswipe in one show.

Excellent! :D It has been far too long since Charlie provided me with a good wipe. And it sounds like this new show should have the best of Screenwipe's lambasting of pop-culture and Newswipe's more serious commentary on current events.

We can only hope. Though seen as 10 O'Clock Live, Black Mirror, A Touch of Cloth and 2012 Wipe are all upcoming it seems like he's very busy.

Indeed it was. As soon as it finished I wished there was more. I hope 10 'Clock Live comes in right after to fill in the hole left in my life by no more Weekly Wipe.

On the score of TV looking up, we also have Being Human 5 starting on Sunday, Utopia on right now, Derek was actually entertaining. So yeah, TV is looking up.

Charlie Brooker is a columnist, formerly TV reviewer, in the Guardian. Writer of Black Mirror, A Touch of Cloth, Dead Set and a few other things, and presents/presented Screen Wipe, News Wipe, Games Wipe, 201x Wipe, You Have Been Watching, How TV Ruined Your Life and 10 O'Clock Live. Example of his stuff here:

His seminal show was Screenwipe, a cynical yet outrageously funny examination of television. It combined reviews of TV shows, his opinions on current trends in television, and behind the scenes investigations of how TV shows are made. The humour ranged from smart jokes to offensive jokes to intentionally bad jokes, but the show also set out to educate viewers about TV production, and the manipulative tricks TV producers use to keep us watching. Here's one of my favourite sequences:

However, Brooker's best show was Newswipe, an even more cynical and even more outrageously funny examination of the news media. It explored how the media sensationalise events and attempt to make themselves relevant by reporting things that aren't actually news. A good episode of Newswipe left you with the impression that our world is doomed.

And thanks for the thread! -if not for this I wouldn't have seen Weekly Wipe yet.

If you like those clips, you can find full episodes of Screenwipe, Newswipe, and Brooker's other BBC shows on Youtube. He allows them to be uploaded because they're not on DVD so their presence isn't hurting him financially, so you don't have to feel bad about it... except the time he made fun of his YouTube viewers in an episode of Screenwipe. Some of the shows he talks about are no longer on the air, and the news stories in Newswipe are obviously from several years ago, but they're still worth a watch.

^And his column in The Guardian is usually worth a read...

... Even the old ones; I'm currently reading my copy of "Dawn of the Dumb".
