I still remember when Tom Cruise was heavily rumoured to play Stark. I think he may have even been originally attached to the first film's early development. I was on board with him playing the part.

I remember Cruise being attached too, but man that would have been a totally different performance. Clooney has at least similar comedic sensibilities similar to Downey, but ultimately Downey was damn near perfect casting.

Plus he would have wanted part of the back-end and marvel is too cheap for that.

I'd go with Dominic Cooper. He did a great job playing Howard Stark in CA:TFA. I think he could do just as well as Tony. Plus he looks a bit like RDJ, probably one of the reasons he was cast as Howard.

That was quite a while ago. Remember how Stark in The Ultimates version used to be drawn to look a little like Cruise (though the character wanted Johnny Depp to play him in the movie, IIRC).

I also remember when Nic Cage was supposed to be playing the role. This was even before he was linked to Superman and he would have suited this role better than Supes (he did win an Oscar for playing an alcoholic in Leaving Las Vegas after all).

Timothy Dalton and Viggo Mortensen were two fan-faves for the role but I think RDJ, while perhaps not exactly like the comic strip version, was just so perfect for this part.

At this point, it would be very hard for me to imagine anyone except RDJ in the role. To me, he IS Tony Stark.

Meh. If Kirk, Spock, and McCoy can be successfully recast, then so can Tony Stark--especially since RDJ's Stark is more "Robert Downey Jr. in an armored suit" than he is an actual character.

No doubt this contributed significantly to the incredible successes of IM and IM2.

Which is why it will be a big deal when the role gets recast one day. He's created a big a connection to the role as Reeve's did for Superman. That first recast for a restart will be news to follow.

I would guess that the only Whedon could think to do when writing this shitty movie was to turn RDJr up to 11, an, as a result, Stark will wind up being a cardboard cutout caricature version of himself. If Whedon was really smart, he'd realize that the best character - and best performer - is really Chris Hemsworth as Thor. I know this because whole I'm not a huge fan of the whole Thor film itself, it would have worked if they stripped 98% of the special effects away, dumped Thor on Earth, and had the whole film be the story about him gaining his powers back, and it's all on the strength of Hemsworth's performance and how the character was written for all the scene's on Earth. (Whereas the actual battle at the end seemed superflous, the film was already over before that battle happened)

While I understand your point, I personally don't feel that those characters have been successfully recast.

It all boils down to each individual's tastes and preferences.

Actually Whedon has realized his best character is Agent Coulson :), which is why he has given Clark Gregg increased lines and has joked in the past that it has been very hard not to keep giving him lines. I think it will be obvious that the film will focus on the Big Three heart and soul characters: Tony, Steve, and Thor. The comics have taken steps to reconcile the three and unite them just in time for the film and no doubt the film will be about these three putting aside their egos and leading the team.

After seeing the teaser(trailer?) I cannot help but wonder how epic a Justice League movie would be. ;)

I was reading that the Hulk cgi models and stuff from this movie will be used for the Hulk TV series on ABC. This has probably been known since the beginning but I haven't really followed the progress of either production.

Which pretty much confirms that Joss will kill him.

Probably right at the moment that Black Widow strips naked and confesses her undying love for him.

Yep Joss possibly killing Coulson or something bad happening to him has been brought up before in the thread. I can't see it happening though...possibly being naive.
