^^ That sounds like a Marathon that would leave you black and blue by the end of it. I'll need to see Zotz! and Phantom Tollbooth. Everything else I've got on DVD or have seen not too long ago. Although I may catch The Lost World-- I remember disliking it when it first came out, so I wonder what I'd think of it now. And Cabin In The Sky might be worth a second look; it was pretty interesting.
Funny story: I showed up early for THE TINGLER to make sure I got one of the "wired" seats. (Yes, I peeked under the seats to see which ones were set to tingle.) Right before the movie, this nice young couple asked me to scoot over one seat, so they could sit together. Now, ordinarily I would oblige, but this was my one chance to see THE TINGLER as William Castle intended it, so . . . . "Er, I'm sorry, no." I'm not sure they understood.
Honestly, it felt like a joy buzzer . . . or maybe a pager set on "Vibrate." But I guess THE VIBRATOR would be an entirely different movie.
I finally got around to watching Marooned, which I recorded last month. I don't think I've seen it since the cut-down, retitled Space Travelers home-video version they used on Mystery Science Theater 3000. The original film is a mixed bag. I love the realism, the effort they put into depicting the space program accurately in a film that came out just months after Apollo 11 landed on the Moon. And I'm forgiving of the unconvincing special effects since it was made in 1969 (although 2001 did much better the year before). But they're too quick to throw out credibility and consistency when it suits them. After Gregory Peck spells out all the reason why it's impossible to mount a rescue mission in less than several weeks, the President tells him to go ahead and try to do it in 40 hours anyway, and then all the logistical problems are ignored aside from a brief bit about streamlining the checklist. And the same thing happens later -- first they say there's no way the Soviet capsule in orbit could rendezvous in time, and then suddenly it shows up without explanation. So it doesn't really hold together.
Time for the next list: Sat 4/20: 7:30 AM: King Solomon's Mines (1937) with Paul Robeson 8:00 PM: Freaks ('32) -- infamous Tod Browning horror film Sun 4/21: 2:15 AM: Burn, Witch, Burn! ('62) -- originally called Night of the Eagle; adaptation of Fritz Leiber novel Conjure Wife with Charles Beaumont/Richard Matheson script 4:00 AM: The Devil's Own ('66) -- orig. The Witches, Hammer horror with Joan Fontaine, written by Nigel Kneale 10:00 AM: Who Framed Roger Rabbit? ('88) Mon 4/22: 8:00 PM: The Wizard of Oz ('39) Tue 4/23: 10:00 PM: The Invisible Man ('33) Fri 4/26: 4:15 AM: Around the World in 80 Days ('56) Sat 4/27: 1:45 PM: Tarantula ('55) -- Jack Arnold-directed giant-monster film 3:15 PM: The Incredible Shrinking Man ('57) -- more Jack Arnold 4:45 PM: Five Million Years to Earth ('68) -- classic Prof. Quatermass movie 6:30 PM: The Monster that Challenged the World ('57) -- B-movie about... giant mollusk monsters. Ohh-kay. Mon 4/29: 2:15 AM: The Seventh Seal ('57) -- Ingmar Bergman's famous "chess with Death" movie. Then Monday night is a marathon of sci-fi films starring Richard Carlson: 8:00 PM: It Came from Outer Space ('53) -- Jack Arnold again 9:30 PM: The Magnetic Monster ('53) 11:00 PM: Riders to the Stars ('54) Sun 4/30: Carlson marathon continues: 12:30 AM: The Power ('68) 2:30 AM: Creature from the Black Lagoon ('54) 4:00 AM: Tormented ('60) Some good stuff toward the end of the month there. I'm going to want to catch The Invisible Man, Tarantula, and maybe some of the Carlson marathon.
That's a great schedule. I own many of them and I think I've seen them all except Burn, Witch, Burn and The Devil's Own, so I'll have to catch those. Anybody interested in Freaks should just go ahead and buy the DVD; it's got some fantastic extras.
Might have to check some of those out. As great as Forbidden Planet, 2001 and Planet of the Apes are I've seen them enough that some of the lesser fare is actually more enticing viewing at this stage.
I'm late for the update. (Is anyone else still willing to do this? I can't guarantee reliability.) Here's what's coming up in the first half of May, not counting whatever we might've missed: Sun 5/5: 2:00 AM: The Tempest (1979): Shakespeare adaptation. Mon 5/6: 12:30 AM: Judex (1917): First four episodes (shown out of order for some reason) of a classic French serial anticipating later pulp crimefighters like the Shadow. Not quite SF or fantasy, but pulp heroes are close enough to make it of interest. Airing order is: Prologue, Ch. 2, Ch. 3, Ch. 1. 6:00 PM: King Solomon's Mines (1950) Wed 5/8: 11:15 AM: Gay Purr-ee ('62): Animated musical from UPA about talking/singing cats, co-written by Chuck Jones and directed by his protege Abe Levitow. With Judy Garland, Robert Goulet, Mel Blanc. This movie got Jones fired from Warner Bros., since he wasn't allowed to moonlight for other studios. Thu 5/9: 1:15 AM: Cocoon ('85) 5:00 PM: Spirits of the Dead ('69): Horror anthology of Edgar Allan Poe stories, directed by Roger Vadim, Louis Malle, and Federico Fellini. With Jane Fonda, Brigitte Bardot, Terrence Stamp, and narrator Vincent Price in English version. Fri 5/10: 9:30 PM: The Horn Blows at Midnight ('45) is on, in case you missed it the last two times it's been on since I've been keeping the list. Sat 5/11: 6:00 AM: Indestructible Man ('56): Lon Chaney Jr. as resurrected criminal on killing spree. Once spoofed on MST3K. 4:00 PM: Poltergeist ('82) Sun 5/12: 2:15 AM: The Twonky ('53): I described this the last time it was on. Weird satire with Hans Conried. 3:45 AM: The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T.: Classic live-action Dr. Seuss film with Conried. Mon 5/13: 12:30 AM: Judex Chapters 5, 6, 4, and 7 (why won't they show these in order?). Wed 5/15: 8:00 PM: Forbidden Planet ('56) Thu 5/16: 4:00 PM: Bell, Book and Candle ('59)
I'll see if I can put together a list for the second half of May today. There's a couple of very interesting items coming up here. I can't wait to see Judex. Hopefully they'll straighten out that episode order.
This is what I found through the end of June. Kind of slim pickin's. 5-18-13 Bride of Frankenstein (1935) - 8pm 5-19-13 Judex (1917) - 12am 5-31-13 Night of the Comet (1984) - 4:15am 6-1-13 Beast From 20,000 Fathoms (1953) - 7:30am Vampire (1957) - 4:15am 6-6-13 Bride of Frankenstein (1935) - 8pm Godzilla, King of the Monsters! (1956) - 9:30pm Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954) - 11pm It Came From Beneath the Sea (1955) - 12:30am King Kong (1933) - 2am Cyclops (1957) - 4am 6-15-13 Night Of The Creeps (1986) - 2am TerrorVision (1986) - 3:30am 6-22-13 From The Earth To The Moon (1958) - 6:15pm 6-27-13 Donovan's Brain (1953) - 10am Beast of Hollow Mountain (1956) - 12:45pm 6-29-13 Whatever Happened To Aunt Alice? (1969) - 10:30pm The Psychopath (1966) - 2:30am
I may have to check out NIGHT OF THE COMET. I don't think I've seen that since it first came out . . ..
