Nothing against our international Trekkers but please. It's an American produced movie it should be shown here first. Just like Lord of the Rings should have premiered in Australia/New Zealand first (and maybe it did I dunno).

Either that or wait for it... premier it every at the same time... that might be better.

BTW, meant to be silly tongue and cheek. ;)

    I just want it now!

JJ told us at the cinema that "Star Trek Into Darkness" premiered in Sydney because... we gave him and the cast such a good time in 2009.

    Lift your game, USA. :guffaw:

Foreign box office is the major weak spot of the last JJ Abrams movie, so they're doing an all-out push to fix that for this film. I wouldn't be surprised if the foreign gate is much higher than the domestic for this outing.

So no, the next Trek film will most likely not premiere in the US first. Just like Iron Man 3, which is making a killing overseas.

I spent the first thirty years of my life having to wait for weeks (sometimes months!) after the U.S. release for films to be released here. I am enjoying some minor turnabout. :)

Australia had a six-month delay getting "ST III: The Search for Spock". A long time to avoid spoilers.

A lot easier to do so back then, though. Not that I'm advocating that kind of delay. :)

Not when we had three issues of the club newsletter to fill in the interim.

But EVERYONE knew Spock was coming back! That was so obvious just looking at the title! ;)

I might be surprised at it being much higher, given the past performance of Trek films overseas, but I think Paramount wouldn't be terribly unhappy if the international box office receipts came close to equaling to the domestic take. That would make for pretty respectable numbers.

but what was keeping them from releasing it here at the same time? or, at most, a week later. This three-week shit is killing me. :(

I'm curious. What is the rationale for releasing it overseas first?

I'm also wondering whether it has anything to do with cutting down the erosion of overseas revenue by piracy, by limiting the circulation of prints in the U.S. (digital or otherwise) before the movie is made available outside the U.S.?

I'm sure that they want to make Trek do well overseas, which makes sense. Besides, given the international themes and messages of cooperation and openness of Trek, it shouldn't matter where it debuts :)

Yeah, you all got shafted for a long 'O time... And a six-month delay getting ST III... now that's just torturously wrong. I suppose turn about is fair play in the end... I still like the release it everywhere at once though.

Hey, you didn't get TOS first, so why should it be any different now?

Its out a week earlier overseas because Iron Man 3 is out a week early. It gives Trek valuable breathing space before the behemoth that is 'FAST AND FURIOUS 6' releases overseas. FF6 is a much bigger film at the international box office than Star Trek unfortunately.
