^ Perhaps the magic of the planetoid also bolstered the health of the pathogen that was making Nancy sick, which counteracted any boost given to her.
And/or the disease was held in some sort of abeyance as long as they remained on the planetoid. Yeah. And to leave meant a death sentence for both since the Companion couldn't servive beyond "a tiny march of days" and the disease would return and kill Hedford. But again this ignores the logic of beaming up to the Enterprise to rid her of the disease. Unless...unless the disease had progressed to a point where nothing more could be done and it was game over.

I think it's clear that the Companion is responsible for Nancy's death, by delaying her trip to the Enterprise, but also that she didn't intend that to happen. The Companion didn't appreciate that the purpose of the shuttle trip was to get Nancy to medical facilities in order to properly treat her. The episode would almost certainly have been better served by addressing guilt, remorse, and forgiveness for that crime.

And maybe in its own way the Companion was trying to do some measure of penance in sacrificing her own immortality. She would finally, eventually, know death.
