exactly where are we getting this Iowa connection? I thought that sign was basically "One" and then the Starfleet logo?

That sure looked like Iowa to me. See the huge buildings in the background? They're the same ones from Kirk's earlier scene where he wrecks Uncle Frank's car.

The old Porthos (the lone surviving member of NX-01) dies right after witnessing the launch of a new Enterprise. Everyone on the bridge (including Spock) has tears in their eyes. I am sure the same will be true of the audience.

I could be wrong, but I think someone from the production (probably Orci) confirmed that the ship construction site Kirk is looking at is indeed in Iowa.

I'm too lazy to look for the quote, but hopefully someone could back me up on this.

TrekMovie: On the Enterprise being built in Iowa — It is amazing that in January after the first trailer, where the ship was being built was the hottest topic. It seem after the second trailer, it still is the hottest topic. Are you surprised this is such a big deal to fans?

Roberto Orci: No, not at all. From the minute we pulled that fan photo of the Enterprise being built in a ship yard - we showed that to JJ as a way to get him excited and to show him how grounded Star Trek could be, literally [laughs]. And he really locked onto that image. We showed with the caveat that if we went down that road, there would be some strong fan reaction, but that we thought we could justify it, but we knew if from second one.

TrekMovie: And do you have any internal reasoning why the ship is being built in Riverside Iowa instead of San Francisco.

    Roberto Orci: Yes.

It just struck me....if James Tiberius Kirk is born on the Kelvin as it is being attacked by Nero, this movie probably won't go over too well in Riverside, Iowa.

^^ That's OK... "The Future Boyhood Home of James T. Kirk" sounds just as good as "The Future Birthplace of James T. Kirk".

I wonder if Abrams will give a few dollars to the Riverside, IA chamber of commerce to help pay for changing all of those references to "Birthplace"?

LOL, I find it somewhat hilarious that in JJs canon, ENT is the only previous Trek that happened! :)

And "Q Who" was a result of the events of Regeneration. Its a fixed time loop.

    The casino already does that.

Out of all trek shows and films the one that should almost entirely be intact in this "film's universe" is Enterprise. Every other show movie and episode now is a complete and total blank canvas.

While it is true all those Trek's did have to happen for the film pieces to get where they needed to go. But once the Narada goes back into time (near apparently the birth of Kirk) we enter a new quantum reality where all Trek's history that takes place after that point no longer exist.

Sure that, what should we call it? Prime quantum reality still exists, but for this film (and very likely any further ventures with this same group) everything beyond that point is a blank canvas.

And as such much (if not most) of Enterprise's history should be intact. It would be the only one.

what were his exact words to Gillian again? "I am from Earth, I only work in outer space"? or did he say "I was born here"? I've forgotten. if he was born on the Kelvin, it'd be a big canon booboo. but then so's the entire movie. oh well.

Why on Earth would you think that?

He can still be born in space, but if he's shipped from there back to Earth as an infant and grows up in Iowa, Iowa will be the earliest home he remembers. He'll be from Iowa. No problem.

I haven't yet heard any reason not to.

As per all the reputable spoilers we've heard: Nero destroys the Kelvin, the planet, and attempts to do the same to San Fran. We have *seen* all those things happening, even if it's only in previews.

Spock arrives in the past to prevent any *further* changes; we don't yet have any reason to believe he could possibly prevent any of the damage that has already occurred.
