You never know? Maybe the new film will incorporate the best elements of both.

Re: Favourite Sci-fi ship?

For small ships: the Jupiter II (LIS) It might not have been armed with much but it was a favorite when I was a kid and I still like it now. Sure, it might need some updating but it should keep the classic lines of the original, maybe with just the ports and hatches re-sized so as to realistically accommodate a few more decks.

For mid-sized ships: the U.S.S. Enterprise (TOS) The lines of the original Constitution class starship are some of the most visually striking that I've ever seen. She invokes the majesty of a tall ship but with the added power of warp drive and enough firepower to decimate a planet.

For large ships: the Stardust II (Perry Rhodan) At the time I was first introduced to it the idea of spherical spaceship half a mile in diameter struck me as absolutely titanic. Little did I know that mile across Titan class ships were coming soon. Still the Imperium class battleships like the Stardust set the bar for me back in the early 70s.

Re: Favourite Sci-fi ship?

Since Sci-fi ship doesn't necessarily mean space ship, I found Nemo's sub in League of Extraordinary Gentlemen to be interesting.

For non-Trek ships, I give a nod to the Space Battleship Yamato and the Millennium Falcon.

Agree, a wonderful classic spaceship.

I liked the LiS Movie version of the Jupiter II. I thought it looked pretty cool. As a ship it wasn't great (its method of faster than light travel was pretty inferior to the standard Sci Fi stuff) but just based off of looks it was one of the few interesting things about the movie.

Re: Favourite Sci-fi ship?

I personally didn't like the Independence Day city crafts. The mother ship and the fighters were fine but the city crafts were your average (albeit updated) flying saucers. Plus, you'd think they'd have a countermeasure preventing objects from colliding with its one hit KO spot (besides the shields). It is not as bad as the Death Star's flawed exhaust port (like they couldn't have put a curve in there along the path to its core) but the Independence Day city crafts are close in my book.
