70's music

I've been working on some iTunes playlists and it got me thinking about those 80's and 90's music threads that were active here a few months ago, and how it might be fun to go back a bit further and break out those polyester bell-bottoms....

What better way to kick off the era than with the end of the previous one? As the learned amongst us will already know, this was filmed and recorded in '69, but released in both media in 1970, as an unintended promotional tie-in to their break-up:

That said, and jumping forward most of a decade, this was the first one that I actually thought about posting...my absolute favorite Stones song, rivalled only by "Get Off of My Cloud" (and I have a feeling that we'll be getting to that thread sooner or later):

I was thinking after the OP that it deserves some recognition that this was the last decade in which The King walked amongst us:

Yeah, the first version I dug up of that "Burning Love" performance from Hawaii included some later bootleg footage of him performing it...the difference was even more stark.

 

Fab Fact: Other than final #1's "Let It Be" and "The Long and Winding Road" in 1970, the Beatles had another top-ten hit in the States in 1976 when the original version of the following song was released as a single to promote a compilation album. It's featured here in a live performance just a couple of days before the end of the decade by the singer/songwriter and his then-current posse:

Ah, "Imagine"...I used to love it as the beautiful song that it truly is, but it became so overexposed in the decades following John's death that it's become played out for me.

This one, on the other hand, retains its charm (freaky video notwithstanding):

And speaking of John, here's the 70s classic that inspired him to come out of househusbandry in 1980:

But if #1 hits by solo Beatles are your game...the B-side of this single charted in the States, but I understand the A-side was a monster hit in the UK, outselling everything up to that point, including all of the Beatles' singles:

It's said to be the first single to sell over 2 million in the UK. "Girl's School", OTOH, only charted at #33 in the States.

 

Aw, I kinda like "Escape" and "Afternoon Delight"...and my big sister used to be all into Shaun back in the day....

(I had to look up "Escape" to verify that it was from '79...turns out it has the dubious distinction of being the last #1 single of the decade.)

 

Although they tend to be more associated with the 60s, we lost these three within a year of each other between '70 and '71:
