I agree. I can't see it moving beyond 3rd place worldwide, and yet there's still plenty of time for it to catch up to Titanic for 2nd place domestically.

Found this online. Edit: Found this, it's exactly the details I didn't have at hand.
It passed the highest grossing Potter film worldwide and Batman(TDK) domestically yesterday.

If it ever could, sadly it won't, pass Titanic I think an IM one sinking Titanic with some armament might be appropriate.

Buy the Saw Trilogy DVD box set, get a free ticket to Saw IV. That was a promo I remember seeing a few years ago.

I can just picture Hulk calling Harry Potter a "puny wizard."

    This weekend estimates:

    1. Snow White $56.2m
    2. MIB 3: $29.3m (-46% from last week.)
    3. Avengers: $20m (-45%)
    4. Battleship: $4.8m (-57%)
    5. The Dictator: $4.7m (-49%)

The Avengers sits at #3 in all time Domestic grosses under Avatar and Titanic at $552.7 million. Titanic sits at $658m. I'd think the likelihood of Avengers overtaking Titanic is slim, it'd have to make anoiher $100m during it's run in the theaters which I'm not sure it'll keep the momentum to do.

All Time World Wide, The Avengers sits at #3 with $1.3 billion under Titanic's $2.2 billion and Avatar's $2.8 billion. I'd say The Avengers has pretty much no chance to overtake Titanic here. (Granted, Titanic is helped with a re-release (two, actually, it had a re-release between initially leaving theaters and release on home video (including a 3D version) and Avatar is helped by 3D showings. (Which, yeah, Avengers has but Avatar was one of those that "must be seen" in 3D, this is mostly not the case with Avengers.)

I wonder where Avengers would rank (I actually wonder this about Avatar and Titanic as well) after adjusting for inflation or going stricly by number of tickets sold rather than total gross dollars brought in.

It looks like Avengers will be able to break into the top 30, but I can't see it passing Grease.

It all depends on how long The Avengers stays in theaters. If it sticks around for as long as The Dark Knight did (select theaters continued to run it a full three months after it was released on DVD), then it very well could make up the difference. Let's assume for the moment that the DVD/Blu-Ray comes to us in September. That'd leave it in some theaters until December.

Avengers will probably wind up in the 650 million dollar range domestically. Not too shabby.

I'm surprised that it's not doing better than it is overseas.

It's got 59% of its box office from overseas so far. That's a pretty healthy proportion, well in line with what's expected for a summer popcorn movie.

On this topic, I just looked up Battleship. 81% foreign BO! Because Americans refuse to see it.

Both Avengers and Battleship were released overseas first. In the case of Avengers, I don't think it mattered. Americans were going to see it anyway, and it's gotten great word of mouth. But Battleship is the type of movie they might want to release in foreign markets first. Get some money before Americans sink it by badmouthing it! :rommie:

It might stay in theatres for that long, but it will be on so few screens (and, mainly, discount screens) that it's pretty unlikely it will be able to make enough money to beat Titanic. Still an impressive showing at the box office, though, no doubt about that. The Dark Knight Rises will have a hard time beating it (especially with a running time close to three hours).
