How about a little thought experiment: against all probability, you've been selected by CBS to head up the sixth Star Trek TV series. You are free to pick any timeline or era you wish, and are guaranteed a massive budget for sfx and salaries for actors, writers, and directors. They sky's the limit, and the only brake is your imagination. You'll be completely free to develop the show however you like. If that means an entire season is based on a Klingon opera cycle and sung entirely in Klingon (with subtitles), that's fine with everyone else. You can blow up earth, un-blow-up Vulcan, or do whatever you like.

There is one, and only one, string attached. You must use a pop/rock song for the opening theme. You absolutely cannot have an orchestral/instrumental arrangement of any kind: it's got to be a song.

What song do you pick, and why?

Getting back to the thread, I'd pick this:

    Wherever You Will Go

When ENT premiered on UPN they used this song in the promos. I thought it would have been a great theme for the show itself.

    Seconded!

I was so disappointed when I found out they weren't using it and doubly disappointed with what they did actually use...

Horrendous!!! :rommie: But I can't think of any pop song that would work tolerably as the theme and I suspect that none exists. I'll keep thinking, and check back in to see of any of you can surprise and astound me.

The TOS theme, performed by a much better pianist than singer.

Changing the lyrics and routing it through your cell phone and doesn't help.

    VOY has lyrics, too!

I've made up lyrics to the TNG theme--hasn't everyone?

I'm really not sure if any pop/rock song could work--I'm hoping to see if someone else can come up with something good.

My personal favorite is Sun Ra's "We Travel the Spaceways." Try watching the END credits with it playing in the background. Works for me. But because it's more jazz than pop, I'm not sure if it counts.

I've thought and done practically all there is to think and do in regards to Star Trek, but I must admit, making up lyrics for the theme songs has never occurred to me before now. :rommie:

I wonder what the DS9 lyrics are....?

    Deep Space Niiiinnneee...
A hunk of Cardie junk at the ass end of the galax-eeeee...

Deep Space Nine, you're the best Star Trek
Deep Space Nine, they should have cancelled Voyager
And given you another season or ten
So you could make up for all that Dukat pagh-wraith crap

Deep Space Nine, you were dark and gritty
So the haters all said you weren't real Star Trek
But we know that in the cosmos, there's none to match you
You gave us Plain Simple Elim Garak

Deep Space Nine, you were epic, amazing
You showed us that underdogs could win
We wish there could be another show like you
Until then, we'll wear our DVDs out

Well that's more what I'd like! :bolian: But it's definitely jazzy and too jokey to really work for takes-itself-dead-serious Star Trek. I can see a Farscape-style space opera using it... or Joss Whedon can re-do Firefly, but with film noir rather than Westerns as the element he's levening the scifi with...

I didn't hate the actual theme. I much preferred it to the DS9 and VOY themes, which were like half-assed symphony music.

Oh, I hated that song with a passion. I heard it back in '98 or '99 and cringed the very first time I heard it. When I found out it was going to be used for the theme for ENT, my initial thought was "You gotta be :censored: me..."
    Seconded!

Somehow, this song has always struck me as fitting for Star Trek/the Federation:

Morrissey - In The Future When All's Well (Beware! Weird video.)

However, using that song might look like I wasn't taking Star Trek seriously enough. Also, I'm not sure it would really work as a theme song.

    Alternatively, there's always this one:

The Zombies - Hung Up On A Dream

It's as idealistic as the whole idea behind the Federation and that's why I associate the song with it. It's also from the 60s, like Star Trek.
