    We're not even sure time existed then as Stephen Hawking expounded in A Brief History of Time. On the other hand, Roger Penrose and his coworkers think they can detect signs of gravitational wave from a previous universe in the CMB, which is cited as evidence for conformal cyclic cosmology.

    Speaking of big bangs, there's a new paper in the New Journal of Physics that says light in a vacuum might not travel at c because the photons sometimes split into electron positron pairs, then recombine. This theory iis to explain the observation that the optical light arriving from supernova 1987A arrived about 4.7 hours after it was expected.

    Wow!...first, admitting the equations were beyond me, I was able to understand enough in the paper to be stimulated and happy to be learning new things about the Cosmos...I got what Franson was saying about light "slowing down" in relation to gravity, but, second, I am having difficulty understanding the difference between a "gravitational field" and a "gravitational potential"...any help would be appreciated...and, again, thank you for posting this! :)

    A gravitational field is the distortion in space-time around a body that, for example, makes satellites orbit while in free-fall. It's measured in Newtons per kilogram.

    A gravitational potential is how much energy it would take to put you somewhere in a gravitational field, which could be a comparison to a point infinitely far away or one close by. It is measured in Joules per kilogram, an answers such questions as how many Joules of energy will it take you to get to the top of the next flight of stairs.

    The concepts are similar to an electric field, which might be an oddly shaped field around some piece of equipment and sometimes hard to measure, versus an electric potential, which is measured by your volt meter when you connect its leads to two different points. An electric field is measured in volts per meter, whereas an electric potential is just in volts, and is always relative to something else.

    How would we know what existed before the Big Bang? I don't think we even understand what happened at, and slightly after, that event.
    Perhaps the laws of physics before it were completely different. What if that universe consisted only of dark matter or what we call antimatter? How can we know?

    Our understanding is limited to this universe. It's impossible to understand what came before, and what will come after it, and what's "outside". That is purely philosophical research.

    How can we know? B-mode polarization patterns in the cosmic microwave background. I mean, duh.

    Neophyte physicist here with a genuine question for his betters...as I understand the "B-modes" (B-mode and E-mode) they were predicted to have been present just "after" the Big Bang...what is their relevance to a "time" before the Big Bang.

    This is rather easy to answer.

    If we take all that science has discovered and sift through it very carefully so that when we come across theories that are supposedly not able to be broken such as light speed and remove the constraints that govern such velocities such as gravity that is created by suns and blackholes that would not have been present prior to the Big Bang then we can paint a picture of how the Universe was before the Big Bang.

    Let's use the speed of light theory as a central node. All excepted and conjectured theories that exist but are not possible because of the speed of light would create a higher orbital of theories because the speed of light although being really fast is not very fast at all when compared to the speed of infinity which extremely fast but still isn't as fast as the next higher orbital of theory. See how the Orbital Theory of Velocity works?

    Just like the electron that moves to a higher orbital so to will the electron of velocity. The only problem is finding out the mechanism that would cause the velocity to jump to the next orbital.

    Another node that connects to the node above would be likened to a table clothe. The table clothe would represent all matter that is present after the Big Bang that when the table clothe is placed on a large ocean surface representing the Universe before the Big Bang occurred the waves from the ocean would cause the table clothe to form into almost an infinite number of variable constants all of which would be governed by the velocity of the particles in the outside of our Universe on those particles that were created after the Big Bang and not the particles of the Big Bang effecting the particles of the outside of our Universe.

    Figuring out how the particles from the outside of the Universe effect the particles on the inside of our Universe is another key to understanding how the Big Bang occurred as well as developing as fast as light speed capable ships.

    Well, let me try to explain it in simpler terms.

    Prior to the big bang there was nothing except the singularity that expanded. Outside that singularity, if you can posit that it had an outside, nothing existed. Since nothing existed, not even time, anything that could exist would be worth an almost infinite price because supply was zero. Inside the singularity the opposite conditions prevailed. All the matter and energy in the entire universe was bundled together, along with twists of what would become all time, forever and always. Since an almost infinite amount of time, energy, and matter were condensed into the same microscopic spot, there was an incredible excess of supply and the price of anything would be virtually zero.

    This created a highly unstable state where a point with an infinite supply and no demand was surrounded by an area of no supply and nearly infinite demand where any matter or energy could command and incredible price.

    The laws of economics engaged, as they always do, creating a massive business expansion as the infinite supply exploded to satisfy the areas of infinite demand, unraveling the twisted knots of space-time because real-estate and time are both worth a lot of money. This caused secondary and tertiary economic effects, including star formation, because daylight is also worth money.

    Needless to say, the universe was formed and shaped by powerful economic forces whose magnitude is almost beyond human comprehension, but whose basic operations are familiar to any capitalist.
