Well, I ignored my own warning and went out anyway between 1:00am and 3:00am local time. It was, alas, still only a shower, but at one point I counted four in a minute, including a spectacular fireball that appeared to pancake and burst brilliantly -- bright enough to light up the neighborhood. Fortunately, I retain my sight today and no triffids have been around.
