OUCH, really!!!! Nothing good then?!! I'll give a grade a curve if the music is good or cinematography was excellent when other things are bad. Not even technical merits then huh? I was thinking Chris Hemmsworth might be at least worth a letter grade in the positive direction.

Seeing it a second time, on the big screen (with an audience that definitely got the movie), I realize it might be the best comic book movie ever made (and, yes, I know it wasn't based on a comic). It's a shame this was really the beginning of the end of Nancy Allen's career; she's good in the sometimes thankless role of Lewis and deserved better roles after this. It's also too bad that Peter Weller didn't go on to many bigger roles afterwards, too. His performance as RoboCop is really a tour-de-force, but not the kind usually recognized as such, since nearly his entire body is obscured by the suit. Just about everyone billed below those two, interestingly enough, have gone on to bigger and better things, although I'd be hard pressed to find Paul McCrane, Kurtwood Smith, and Ronny Cox playing villains better than these. And, boy, did the movie look great on the big screen. There's really no excuse for the movie's numerous home video releases, which have looked terrible regardless of format. The movie deserves better (hopefully it will get it when the remake comes out). Theatres: 33 +1 Home Video: 39 Computer: 5

Snow White and the Huntsman (C) Every so often I gamble on movies with mediocre reviews, and in this case it's been almost a month since I went to the cinema, so I went to see this. The trailers for this made it look unexpectedly cool. It is atmospheric, to be sure, but pretty listless. One doesn't get the sense watching this that any of the actors involved really cared about it that much. Theron's evil queen has a few moments, but the attempts to give her a tragic backstory are half-hearted. Hemsworth is okay (affecting a Scotch brogue). I've defended Stewart as being an actress with legitimate talent in the past, on the strength of things like Adventureland, but she's miscast here - she's intermittently believable as Snow White, Friend To All Things, and not at all believable as Snow White, Warrior Princess. Admittedly, the script gives her no help in that regard, because her Braveheart moment is pretty weak stuff -- it's hard to see how that looked good even on the page. They've also thrown in a slew of British character actors playing the dwarves, for some reason. Cinema: 13 (+1) Home Video: 38 Computer: 6

Man, first Odo now Captain Canada but the grading has come up some I suppose. I was kinda looking forward to Snow White tomorrow night. She has a "Braveheart" moment...oh, boy.
About a half hour or so into it, I started keepin' a mental checklist of stuff from the trailer as it showed up in the movie, to try & figure out how much more there was to watch... In line now for Piranha 3DD!

And the DVD has a "choose their fate" option, which IMDB.com says gives some characters gruesome-er deaths, or something...I say the ones in the theatrical cut are complicated enough as it is. What ever happened to simple stuff like gettin' hit by a bus? After work tonight, I went over to Drafthouse South Lamar, since they have Piranha 3DD, the sequel to Piranha 3D, playin'. It wasn't the gratuitous nudity, the penis mutilation or the gore that made this movie awesome...it was David Hasselhoff as himself!!! He even has the line, "Welcome to rock bottom." And there are bloopers & outtakes in 3D mixed in with the credits!

Haywire: C I watched these two female led action films back/back on purpose. Trying to figure out if Zoe really has it or Gina was going to make a run at Angelina's role as female action heroine. Zoe is in the lead for sure. While Gina Carano has a serviceable first outing her performance lacks any nuance. One could argue she is on edge the whole film but even in the flashbacks she seems stuck on one note. Could be she was directed that way. The movie also is lacking in dialogue at many times during the short 90min film. There are stretches in the film where just nothing is spoken and it feels a bit dull. I'd watch another film with her. Not even Arnold's first action films were much more to speak of than this if one is objective.
66. The Crow Very atmospheric film about a man coming back from the dead to avenge his murder. It's pretty straight forward, but the set design (and those shots of flying over the city), music and performances really draw one into this world. The climax felt a bit forced, but since it led to a great looking battle atop a church during rain, even that can be forgiven.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (A-) Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas: There are two moments of utter brilliance in this film: a pair of voice overs taken from the novel reflecting upon the 60s generation. The rest of the film is pretty hard to get a grasp upon, although it is so rich in visual details (which suggest all kinds of narratives that go unseen or appear only in a flash) that it certainly rewards multiple viewings. Two viewings in (I saw a film print of it in 2005) I still don't know quite what to make of it -- but I know I want to see it again. Theatres: 33 Home Video: 40+1 Computer: 5
13. Independence Day (1996) A Will Smith, Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pulman, Vicica A. Fox, Mary McDonnell. Directed By Roland Emmerich My computer crashed early last month so before I bought the one I'm using now I watched a lot of movies to kill the time! It'd been a while since I watched ID4 and really this film still stands the test of time as one of the all time great summer blockbuster movies. It has everything you could ever want in a science fiction blockbuster. Really was the first Emmerich film to cement what I call the "Emmerich formula" of interweaving characters and plots, similar themes and motifs. I could watch this over and over and not get bored. The cast is tremendous, the score is awesome, and so are the visual effects. Plus I spotted for the first time (never made the observation before) a very young Adam Baldwin as the Air Force Major!!! 14. The Day After Tomorrow (2004) C + Dennis Quaid, Jake Gyllenhaal, Emmy Rossum, Ian Holm and Sela Ward. Directed By Roland Emmerich...based on "The Coming Global Superstorm" By Art Bell and Whitley Strieber. This is a guilty pleasure film for me and maybe my favourite Jake Gyllenhaal film, and perhaps the last decent Emmerich film he has made. Not really much to say about the actual movie, except that the cast is great, the scene where New York City is flooded is great...and Emmy Rossum is super cute in this film! The score is tremendous as well.

Just stop at a gas station & use the squeegee things...it'll save ya from drownin'!!! And I rented the fifth from Blockbuster after work, just finished it. Makin' it a prequel is both awesome and stupid. But I did like that Tony Todd was back (he only did voice work for the third & wasn't in the fourth at all) with an expanded role.
67. Men In Black 3 That was a lot of fun. Looking at the film's production history, it has no right to be as entertaining as it was, but they somehow pulled it off. What this film does better than the second one is that it has a lot of nods to the first one without just copying it.

This is the latest one, having made over $100 million worldwide thus far - it's the only real success story of the summer so far apart from The Avengers. I saw it with my mother, a woman of exceptionally narrow taste in movies (no blood, violence, or particularly intense situations), and this is the sort of pleasant fare she really prefers. And, indeed, this is a movie that knows exactly what it wants to be, and mostly succeeds. It has a few too many characters floating around to totally work (Celia Imrie and Ronald Pickup are playing basically the same character, for instance, and I imagine they could easily have been combined), but it's funny, likeable, and manages some genuine insight into the lives of its mostly elderly cast. The trailers suggested it might be one of those films where contact with inspirational minorities inspire troubled white people, but that's not the case at all (even Maggie Smith's subplot, which treads the closest to that, becomes about something else). It does right by the younger ones, as well; Dev Patel gets his first really good role since Slumdog (I hope his role on Sorkin's new show works out, too; this may be a great year for him), having publicly struggled with finding the types of parts he's interested in in Hollywood. It's also rather interesting, given how age usually works in the movies, so see the 80ish Judi Dench paired opposite Bill Nighy, who's twenty years her junior and frankly looks younger than that. Tom Wilkinson has probably the most serious role, and it's another strong performance from one of the more reliable actors working today (Wilkinson and Dench are both teaming with Madden for a third time). Been curious about the Jesse Stone series, since seein' some of the DVDs for cheap at Wal-Mart. Couldn't remember the title of the first after lookin' it up, and the guy at Blockbuster couldn't tell me. So, since Netflix has a few of 'em available, I looked 'em up on IMDB.com, and turns out, the first four movies in the series are available. So, I'm watchin' the first one right now.

She'd have made a great tavern wench in the film! I liked the dwarves and Hemmsworth's Huntsman who's not given a name that I recall. The middle drags a bit due to poor set up imo but not a horrid film. Wait for DVD, go see Avengers again.

Fast Times at Ridgemont High (B) Famous 1980s teen comedy, but perhaps it suffers from having been talked up, because I really didn't think it was that impressive. It's not very quotable, and the characters are mostly muted (Jeff Spicoli is clearly pitched as the scene-stealing supporting character, and indeed does have a following, but I'm hard-pressed to see why, beyond the novelty value of looking back at a very different phase of Sean Penn's career). The most interesting thing about the movie is its handling of Jennifer Jason Leigh's abortion, which, though it almost weighs on the side of being a bit too flip, is far more direct than you would ever expect to see in a teen movie today (or back then). It's Complicated: (✩✩✩✩) - DVD - A divorced woman (Meryl Streep) with grown kids begins having an affair with a married man (Alec Baldwin) who also happens to be her ex husband, all the while keeping this a secret from the man she's dating (Steve Martin). The movie has been described as "rich white people's problems" because of the upper middle class Santa Barbara living and lack of dire conflict, but I quite enjoyed it as a mild romantic comedy with a bit of heart and depth. 161. The Note: (✩✩) - Internet - A plane crashes off the coast, killing everyone onboard. Following this, a small town newspaper writer revives her dwindling column by trying to find out which passenger wrote the note that washed up onshore. Meanwhile, she deals with a budding relationship with a co-worker. I got this movie because I wanted to see something with Genie Francis, Jonathan Frakes' wife. It was a chore to watch, but it got my attention in the last 20 minutes or so once things started coming together and a few twists and revelations popped up. The ending elevated this to two stars. 162. The Note II: Taking a Chance on Love: (✩✩) - DVD - This is the sequel to The Note. Genie Francis and most of the cast are back. This time our lead is apprehensive about marrying her co-worker. Another vanilla TV movie. It wasn't as hard to watch, but it's not much better than the first. 163. The Vow: (✩✩✩✩) - On Demand - A young couple are in a car accident and the wife (Rachel McAdams) loses her memory. A few years of her life to be more specific. The movie deals with hubby (Channing Tatum), who she has no memory of, trying to help her, while her parents and ex fiancé, who she hasn't seen in years, try to take advantage of her memory loss. I went in not expecting much because the plot reminded me of Adam Sandler's 50 First Dates, but this isn't the same movie and I found it to be pretty engaging with moments that genuinely upset me a little. I mean that in a good way. A good movie should reach you on some level. 4 stars may be a tad strong, but I didn't want to give it 3 and a half.
