Maybe I'm just holding out hope that he wouldn't be back. I don't necessarily dislike his scores, I just feel like it's time for something new.

Dose anyone know off the top of his head just how many Bond films weren't scored by either him or Barry?

    Six.

Dr No (Monty Norman - though Barry was involved as arranger)
Live And Let Die (George Martin)
The Spy Who Loved Me (Marvin Hamlisch, and not in fact Burt Bacharach at all.)
For Your Eyes Only (Bill Conti)
    Licence To Kill (Michael Kamen)
Goldeneye (Eric Serra, and John Altman uncredited re-scoring after previews noticed that Serra's score wasn't up to the job)

Burt Bacharach? I thought it was Marvin Hamlisch. Bacharach did the 60s "Casino Royale", though that was obviously not part of the official film series.

Ah, yes, I was getting momentarily confused there - it was Hamlisch...

And they reused one of John Barry's scores for the tank chase, as far as I know.

No, that was one of John Altman's pieces, specifically requested to be more traditionally Bond (and Barry) ish

It's kind of a shame though. I really liked Serra's original piece for the tank chase. Sure in the end we would have been deprived of the traditional Bond theme in the film, but I think the film would have been stronger for it.

I realize I'm perhaps one of the few people who feel this way, but there you go.

His role probably isn't in the film. Not a huge deal either way, imo.

^ Not a huge deal...but Felix is one of my favourite characters. I blame John Logan :)

It wasn't used that much in QoS, though, either. Maybe one or two places, aside from the closing credits. Though I did like how it was used, with an unusual arrangement that fit in with the flavor of the track. I personally think the Bond theme should be laid on thick, but also integrated into the score so it doesn't get too repetitive, pretty much the way "You Know My Name" was quoted throughout Casino Royale, but always in different ways appropriate to the mood. You can even have it straight up when Bond's just being insanely awesome.

I don't particularly want to go back to the early days, where James Bond gets his entire theme music straight-up when he arrives in a hotel and starts unpacking his suitcase, but I consider that a far milder sin than one of the Dalton movies I watched recently, where the score was so dull that I was screaming DA DA, DA DA, DA DA DAAAA, DA NA, NA NA NAAAAA! at the TV during an action sequence it should've by all rights been playing over.

Well, that's not too bad. You can have a Bond movie without him. I was worried he'd been recast when I saw the headline.

Yeah, not that big of a deal. Didn't the Moore films only use him once?

No it isn't - the character has only been in, what, seven out of the original 20 films before the reboot?

4 out of 6 Connery films, (always a different actor!)
1 out of 7 Moore films
2 out of 2 Dalton films (both times a different actor, one of them the same actor as in the Moore film)
0 out of 1 Lazenby film
0 out of 4 Brosnan films

It's not significant in the sense that it is detrimental to the film or the plot, but it is the first indication of change in the Craig era. Jeffrey Wright did a good job in his portrayal I thought as well.

^ It would annoy me if they'd recast the role but I get the impression that the character simply isn't being used this time out. I don't have a problem with that. He's a recurring character, not a regular. I wouldn't say that his absence indicates 'change.'

And it's not like he really did much in the two films he has appeared in (much to my disappointment). I love Jeffery Wright so I'm disappointed that he might not return but it's not a big loss.
