I'm looking for a horror movie to watch tonight. I like: The Descent 28 Days Later Cube Night of the Living Dead Friday the 13th Part II I don't want to watch a teen slasher film nothing would subtitles (nothing against foreign films, I just need to be able to work on homework at the same time) and preferably something within the last 20 years. Shoot.
Older than 20 years, but John Carpenter's "Prince of Darkness" was the first movie that really freaked me out.. Satan as interdimensional alien banished to earth.... Only has one "GOTCHA" moment toward the end, so I don't count it as a slasher flick. Also, a very creepy performance by Alice Cooper... Low budget, but it worked for me...
Try Session 9. Fans always seem to either love it or hate it, and I'd be interested to see on which side you fall.
Try some Asia Tartan Extreme - The Ring, The Eye. Very different to western horror and sometimes more disturbting because of it. There's one where they're eating dead babies, can't remember the title, though.

Yeah I love that film, it has just a wonderful creepy atmosphere to it, great locations and music (love Carpenter soundtracks) plus the melding of science and superstition works wonderfully I thought. Not sure I hated it, but I didn't think it lived up to expectation. The Ring is one of my all time favourite horror films, but the more Japansese/Korean horrors I watch the samier they seem to be, and whilst creepy girls with long black hair are scary, they're not scary all the time. If The Eye is the one I think it is the set piece at the end is unbeleivable good however!

Another vote for DOG SOLDIERS, especially if you liked THE DESCENT. DAGON is good, too. (And, when you can accomodate subtitles, THE ORPHANAGE is fantastic.)
I impulse bought that film. I found it to be an interesting concept, but rather awkwardly executed. I would not recommend that he does his homework whilst watching that, or any of the other fine films recommended here though. That's really not on.
Might be tough to get your hands on with short notice but I highly recommend [rec], it's a foreign film that the recent film Quarantine was a remake of. It's not overly gory, just a great little gem. Judging the horror movies you like, I think it'd be right up your alley. EDIT: Oops, I saw your no subtitles thing... Put it on your To-Do list. Heh.
Would you be interasted in something REALLY scary as hell? Try the remake of the FLY. I think that movie is really scary due to the fact he CAN'T run away from the monster because he is the monster. It's both VERY frightning and sad. Oh! and if I wer'e you I would have a BARF bag handy( you'll NEED IT!)
Oh! I forgot to mention HELLRAISER. Now THAT! movie will keep you up for awhile. Plus the music is SURPRISINGLY GOOD!
I was prepared to give it some thought and make up a nice list of excellent horror films, until I read this. It would seem you can't be bothered to give a film the attention it deserves. No offence intended, I know a lot of people are like that. However, as a dedicated cinephile, it's an attitude I will never understand.
When You're right you're right, I SHOULD have said the same thing Whitman. I mean unless you are actually WATCHING the entire thing and paying attention to the screen,the movie looses it's effect.
"Fright Night" is pretty good. So is "Vampire in Brooklyn" with Eddie Murphy in a non-comedy role. If you're willing to go back to the late 70s-early 80s, I'd add a vote for the original "The Fog", and "The Howling". Interesting you said "no teen slasher" but you liked "Friday the 13th II"...
He can like Friday the 13th Part II and not be in the mood for a teen slasher; that's not so strange.
Man good call! I always forget about the Fly but it's truly great horror film, scary and sad all at the same time. It's very uncomfortable watch in places too.
