It really has been a rollercoaster ride. I don't think I know what the heck is going on anymore! :(

I really hate to say this, but I'm going to revise my prediction down to $425m or less for this movie. Seemingly, Trek does have a ceiling with the masses, and the often cited "stigma" is just too difficult to erase.

All I can recommend is that everyone relax. It's like trying to lose weight and jumping on the scale every hour. Fluctuations will happen, and it's best to wait a few days before making projections. Hell, even on Monday, the movie will still be in it's opening jump. Who knows, it might be slow to pick up but takes off once it gets rolling? I've seen it before.

Relax and promote it out the wazoo. Also, see it again!

I hope Paramount will now advertise the HELL out of you know what in all the commercials all this weekend! They should have been upfront about it from the start. :sigh:

That's an interesting point. Does anyone else think revealing it from the start might have generated more sentimental interest among the non-trek masses?

If they had milked the hell out of the
    KHAN
thing in all the trailers, I think it might have added another 10 million to the first weekend.

It's a horrible feeling, but I think there may be some truth in that.

No, not in the least. The trailers were excellent, the movie is stuffed full of excitement, action and characterisation - and it still isn't enough. Like it or not, the superhero reigns supreme at the BO currently, no matter how middling a movie may be. Personally, I thought IM3 was VERY average, and yet, it's sailed past a billion dollars on the crest of a good, but nevertheless, way overrated team-up flick. Ah well...

Let's at least wait until today's numbers are in before totally pre-failing this thing.

    *hopeful*

Star Trek 2009 did $80m 4 years ago in 2D with lower ticket prices in 3.5 days.

Star Trek Into Darkness may not make it to 80m in four days with increased ticket prices and 3D premium on top. It is also a sequel with tends to be more front loaded. This is a poor result which ever way you look at it.

Star Trek 2009 made it to $274m in today's 2D prices.

Star Trek Into Darkness may not make it to $200m even with 3D.

    What went wrong?

Let's just wait a few weeks, maybe it'll be a huge hit after all...

But if it doesn't, I think the main cause is the 4 year wait... I always thought that was an incredibly long wait for a film which "only" made 250 million in the US... It was a hit no doubt, but did it really validate a 4 year (!) gap........???

For god's sake, advertise the 'you know what' being in this movie! Why even have that element in it, if you're not going to promote it?! I thought that was the point, to put bums in seats.

How could they have screwed this up? :(

For what it's worth, our last RTH update had still been a hopeful one. Let's not rush to any conclusions just yet...!

It's like how DISNEY of all people ditched the word "princess" in favor of that thrilling name, John Carter.

KHAN KHAN KHAAAAAAAAAN!!!!! See, they need this.
