My benchmark for when Who jumps the shark is when K9 shows up and Tom Baker can no longer be bothered to wear a tie or button his waistcoat--more or less after "The Horror of Fang Rock."

"...Fendahl" is after that, but K9 stays stuck in the TARDIS and, IIRC, Baker wears a vest and tie in it. (Not that those are the reasons the story is good--they're just benchmarks that happen to line up with good.)

What I'm doing a terrible job of explaining is that my expectations start to drop after "The Invisible Enemy," so when you get a nifty Hinchcliffe--feeling story like "...Fendahl" it is a treasure.

Do you think if they returned in New Who they'd be made to suck or could they still be made scary?

She fancied him?
But Leela doesn't seem the type to fancy random guys.
I dunno, she left the Tardis for a guy she'd met two minutes ago...
I speculate it must have gone like this: "If this is the best example of the warriors that protect the Doctor's home world, it's in big trouble. Andred probably can't even kill and skin and cook his own food, like that useless Rodan and her silly capsules. I'd better stay here and teach these idiots how to survive."

So the only good Tom Baker story is one in which he wears a tie and buttons his waistcoat? Or is that Classic Who in general?

If so, you must have absolutely loathed Planet of Fire since the Doctor goes around in shirtsleeves and Turlough strips down to his swimsuit (there's a rather interesting screenshot from that part of the episode that probably can't be posted here anymore... ).

Also, K9 is the best Tom Baker companion. Well, ok, maybe he's tied with Sarah Jane. Still, I love that robot Dog. I wish Britain wasn't weird and the BBC actually owned K9 (I still don't get how people can make stuff specifically for a show but the show doesn't actually own it, its like if Paramount/CBS/etc had to keep asking permission and paying to use the klingons back when ST was on the air). I'd like to see K9 on NuWho more.

Good luck getting that back off Disney. They took the character and frankly butchered it into a show that was not that great.
